Will the SC Order on Bhojshala Prayers Foster Harmony Between Hindus and Muslims?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Dhar (Madhya Pradesh), Jan 22 (NationPress) Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) legislator Rameshwar Sharma stated on Thursday that members of the Muslim community should act with wisdom, ensure harmony with Hindus, and permit worship at the Bhojshala temple located in Dhar district, Madhya Pradesh.
Sharma's remarks came in response to the Supreme Court's decision allowing both communities—Hindu and Muslim—to offer prayers at the contested Bhojshala Temple-Kamal Maula mosque on Friday.
“Muslims believe that if God resides in a temple, their prayers are not acknowledged there. Therefore, they should comprehend this and act wisely, maintain harmony with Hindus, and facilitate worship at Bhojshala,” stated Sharma, who represents Bhopal’s Huzur Assembly constituency and is recognized as a staunch Hindutva leader within the BJP.
He added that ‘Sanatanis’ (Hindus) will persist in approaching the Supreme Court for the right to worship Goddess Saraswati at this disputed location.
It is important to note that the Bhojshala Temple-Kamal Maula mosque complex is a point of contention, with both Hindus and Muslims asserting their religious attachments to it.
The conflict arises from the fact that Hindus regard Bhojshala—a protected 11th-century site by the Archaeological Survey of India—as a temple dedicated to Vagdevi (Goddess Saraswati), while the Muslim community identifies it as the Kamal Maula mosque.
The situation has intensified as the Basant Panchami festival for Hindus coincides with the Muslims' gathering for namaz on the same day.
According to an arrangement established by the ASI on April 7, 2003, Hindus perform puja on the Bhojshala grounds on Tuesdays, while Muslims offer namaz on Fridays.
The Supreme Court has now permitted Hindu prayers from sunrise to sunset on Basant Panchami and allowed Muslims to conduct namaz from 1 pm to 3 pm on the same day at this disputed location.
In line with the Supreme Court's directive, the Dhar district administration has enhanced security, deploying over 8,000 police personnel and Rapid Action Force (RAF) units in the vicinity of the contested site.
“We are thoroughly prepared for the Basant Panchami festival this Friday. Our main goal is to ensure optimal law and order,” stated Dhar district Collector Priyank Mishra during a media briefing on Thursday.
Sharma also urged media outlets to avoid any interpretation of the Supreme Court's ruling regarding the permissions for both Hindus and Muslims to perform their religious observances at the site.
He warned that any content inciting religious discord, whether through print media, television, or social media platforms like WhatsApp or Facebook, would face stringent action under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita and the IT Act.
