Thrissur, Dec 13 (NationPress) In a remarkable turn of events, the Bharatiya Janata Party's Muslim candidate, Mumtaz, has emerged victorious in the Kannankulangara ward during the Thrissur Corporation elections, successfully taking the seat from the Congress.
This victory is perceived as a significant achievement in the BJP's efforts to penetrate Congress-dominated wards within the corporation. While the party nominated a prominent entrepreneur, Mumtaz's candidacy was particularly unique and unforeseen. She stands out as the sole Muslim candidate presented by the BJP in Thrissur.
Mumtaz triumphed in the 35th division of the corporation, a ward characterized by a substantial Hindu majority. For the past eight years, she and her family have been active members and supporters of the BJP. In the last two years, she has also held responsibilities in the party’s Minority Morcha, based in Chennai.
Professionally, Mumtaz operates a pet grooming business in Thrissur that provides care for domestic animals. She views her candidacy as a chance to contribute to and serve her community. Previously, she mentioned that the developmental vision presented by Prime Minister Narendra Modi attracted her to the BJP.
A dedicated party member for eight years, Mumtaz has engaged in various BJP activities and election campaigns, including those led by the actor-turned-politician Suresh Gopi. In the Kannankulangara ward, she defeated Congress candidate Sindhu Chakkolayil, while Seena represented the Left Democratic Front (LDF).
This year's Thrissur Corporation elections have also underscored the increasing involvement of women in local body politics, with a total of 28 female candidates participating.
Reflecting on her selection as a candidate, Mumtaz expressed, “I have been dedicated to the party for the past eight years. The party chose me because it believed I could connect with the people. In both my professional and personal life, I actively engage with society.”
