How has BJP strengthened its position in Telangana ULBs?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Hyderabad, Feb 16 (NationPress) The BJP has notably augmented its foothold in urban local bodies (ULBs) within Telangana, establishing itself as the primary party in over 15 municipalities, as stated by state BJP president N. Ramchander Rao on Monday.
He asserted that the party has made inroads in various regions that previously lacked its representation.
During a press conference, he noted that while enhancing its voter base, the BJP has also disrupted the stability of its political rivals.
Ramchander Rao was honored by BJP corporators who were elected as Mayor and Deputy Mayor of Karimnagar Municipal Corporation.
He claimed that the BJP successfully thwarted all efforts by the Congress and the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS) to undermine the democratic mandate.
Moreover, he alleged that despite the supposed plots by the All India Majlis-e-Ittehadul Muslimeen (AIMIM), the BJP raised its saffron flag in Bhainsa municipality.
Ramchander Rao revealed that the BJP increased its representation from nearly 240 wards in 2020 to approximately 340 wards in 2026, marking a net gain of around 100 wards, which showcases consistent organizational growth.
“From having a significant presence in only two municipalities before, the BJP has now become the largest party or a key decision-making entity in more than 25 municipalities statewide. The party has transitioned from a third-place contender in numerous municipalities in 2020 to a crucial post-poll influencer, especially in North Telangana,” he stated.
He highlighted that the BJP secured 17 seats in Karimnagar Municipal Corporation, 11 wards in Adilabad municipality, eight wards in Kamareddy municipality, and six wards in Metpalli municipality.
These achievements, he argued, reflect not only numerical growth but also the geographical and structural expansion of the party’s influence.
The state BJP chief pointed out a noticeable decline in the BRS’s performance. Its vote share fell from about 43% in 2020 to roughly 29% in 2026, which is a reduction of nearly 14 percentage points.
He added that the ward count for the BRS diminished from approximately 1,340 wards in 2020 to about 780 wards in 2026, equating to a loss of over 550 wards.
Despite being in power in the state, Congress managed to win only about 70 out of 123 urban local bodies, indicating that nearly half of urban Telangana has not given Congress unequivocal control.
Ramchander Rao mentioned that the Congress vote share declined from roughly 44% during the 2023 Assembly elections to around 40% in the 2026 ULB elections.
