Kolkata, April 23 (NationPress) The Border Security Force (BSF) has successfully disrupted a bid to smuggle arms and ammunition across the Indo-Bangladesh Border (IBB) by confiscating three pistols, six magazines, and 13 rounds of ammunition.
This event occurred in Malda district of West Bengal. Around 7 p.m. on Tuesday, personnel from the 119 Bn BSF, stationed at the Nawada Border Outpost, detected suspicious activity involving two individuals approaching the border from the Indian side.
"The jawans quickly alerted their fellow officers and issued warnings to the approaching individuals. As the suspects realized they were being surrounded by BSF forces, they retreated back to the Indian territory. Although the BSF jawans pursued them, the suspects managed to escape using the cover of low visibility and uneven terrain. Eventually, a bag was recovered, which contained three pistols, six magazines, and 13 rounds of ammunition," stated N K Pandey, Deputy Inspector General and spokesperson for the South Bengal Frontier of the BSF.
This seizure is regarded as significant, especially considering the current climate in Bangladesh, where armed mobs are reportedly persecuting members of minority communities, including Hindus, Buddhists, and Christians. There are suspicions that the seized pistols were intended for use by these groups.
"The pistols appear to be sophisticated, but their origin remains undetermined. The confiscated weapons have been handed over to the appropriate authorities for further investigation," remarked a senior BSF official.
In the meantime, Pandey expressed satisfaction regarding the success of the BSF personnel, affirming their commitment to safeguarding the IBB against all forms of crime and protecting the nation's sovereignty, despite ongoing challenges.
The Border Security Force (BSF) operates as a central armed police force under the Ministry of Home Affairs, charged with securing the borders of India with Pakistan and Bangladesh.
