Chennai, Oct 13 (NationPress) Dr. S. Ramadoss, the founder of Pattali Makkal Katchi (PMK), has cautioned the Tamil Nadu government against hastily eliminating caste-associated names from streets, villages, tanks, and other public spaces. He warned that such actions could undermine the state’s social fabric and lead to unnecessary tensions among diverse communities.

In an online statement, Ramadoss highlighted that the government's recent directive to erase caste-specific names, which have been in use for generations, has ignited significant debate throughout the state.

He emphasized that many areas and institutions bear the names of individuals who made notable contributions to public welfare, education, and community progress—often generously donating land or backing vital social initiatives.

“These names were designated by local residents to honor their ancestors who played crucial roles in the area's development. Many freedom fighters and social reformers, who fought for the nation, language, and the people, are also commemorated through these names—sometimes including their caste identifiers,” Ramadoss remarked.

He maintained that in numerous locations, such names symbolize the shared identity of communities that have coexisted harmoniously for generations.

“By eliminating these caste-referenced names, the government risks erasing the historical and cultural identity of entire groups. This contradicts Tamil Nadu’s legacy of social unity,” he cautioned, adding that the action appears to disregard the sacrifices and memories of the state’s ancestors.

The PMK leader also noted that renaming initiatives in various regions have already incited discord among local populations.

“If the government insists on altering a community-related name, it should at least replace it with a respected leader from that community. This will foster acceptance among the people,” he suggested.

Ramadoss also pointed out the recent naming of a flyover in Coimbatore after industrialist G.D. Naidu, questioning the government's consistency in its approach.

“If caste-related names are to be avoided, then ‘Naidu’ is also a caste designation. The government cannot apply a double standard,” he stated.

In conclusion, Ramadoss urged the Tamil Nadu government to exercise patience and caution.

“Before making any decisions, the perspectives of local residents must be considered. Social identity cannot be erased through government mandates,” he stressed.
