Will STPs near Ganga be monitored using CCTV and AI tools?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 5 (NationPress) The Jal Shakti Minister C.R. Paatil announced on Monday that to improve the oversight of STPs, the National Mission for Clean Ganga (NMCG) is set to implement a CCTV-based real-time monitoring system that incorporates AI technology.
During the 17th gathering of the Empowered Task Force (ETF), Paatil emphasized the need for a technology-oriented approach to river rejuvenation and praised the completion of 15 pollution control infrastructure projects in the previous year, calling it a significant milestone in the ongoing efforts to restore the Ganga.
Detailing the CCTV initiative, the Minister stated that although STPs are currently monitored through Online Continuous Effluent Monitoring Systems (OCEMS)—which measure essential water quality indicators such as BOD, COD, DO, pH, and TSS—and are linked to the public Ganga Pulse dashboard, this new initiative, combined with an AI-enhanced feature extraction system and a centralized dashboard, will add a vital layer of visual and physical oversight to ensure the effective functioning of STPs.
The meeting concentrated on enhancing data-driven decision-making, monitoring methods, and compliance structures under the Namami Gange Programme, with a particular focus on drainage mapping and improved surveillance of sewage treatment facilities, as stated in a release.
Paatil remarked that the successful completion of these projects signifies improved coordination, diligent monitoring, and targeted execution, establishing a strong groundwork for long-lasting river rejuvenation.
Uttar Pradesh took the lead with the finalization of six projects, followed by Bihar and West Bengal with four and three projects, respectively. He also noted that both Uttarakhand and Delhi completed one project each.
