Why Are Christmas Celebrations in Kerala Under Attack?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 24 (NationPress) The assault on a Christmas carol group in Palakkad has incited significant political responses and alarm from Church authorities, with Opposition Leader V.D. Satheesan asserting a "nationwide" trend of assaults on Christians and Cardinal Baselios Cleemis labeling the situation as profoundly troubling.
During a Facebook Live session on Wednesday, Satheesan stated that incidents of the "Sangh Parivar" disrupting Christmas festivities have become alarmingly frequent across various states.
“Christians are being attacked throughout the nation. Even in Kerala, a carol group faced interruption in Palakkad,” he remarked.
Drawing a sharp comparison, the Opposition Leader noted that “those who come to our homes bearing Christmas cake may disguise their true intentions,” alleging that identical forces are behind the nationwide attacks on Christians.
Challenging the basis of claims that distributing the Bible is illegal, Satheesan argued that such assertions are baseless and vowed to stand against what he termed the "anti-democratic actions of the Sangh Parivar across the nation".
Adding to the alarm, Cardinal Baselios Cleemis, Major Archbishop-Catholicos of the Syro-Malankara Catholic Church, expressed concern regarding the disparity between public gestures and actual events.
“On one hand, we observe Prime Minister Narendra Modi welcoming Church leaders and exchanging Christmas greetings. Conversely, we are witnessing reports of attacks on Christians engaged in Christmas celebrations from several locations. This is disheartening,” the Cardinal stated, emphasizing the necessity for harmony to be evident in real actions.
Meanwhile, the youth branch of the CPI(M), the Democratic Youth Federation of India (DYFI), along with the Congress, have vehemently condemned the Palakkad incident.
The DYFI has announced plans for protest carol events to be held in 2,500 units throughout Palakkad district.
The organization cautioned that if the RSS attempts to obstruct these events, they will respond firmly.
The Congress party alleged that the attack was a tactic by the RSS-BJP aimed at upsetting communal harmony and claimed it was a retaliatory act following the BJP's failure to garner expected support from the Christian community during elections.
The party has demanded that BJP leadership expel those responsible for the violence.
The DYFI also criticized BJP leader C. Krishnakumar for purportedly endorsing the attack, branding his “communal nature” as revealed and referring to him as the “Praveen Togadia of Palakkad”.
