Key Takeaways
Thiruvananthapuram, Dec 24 (NationPress) Chief Minister Pinarayi Vijayan vehemently denounced the assaults on Christmas celebrations throughout the nation, asserting that any efforts to erode constitutional rights and Kerala’s diverse cultural fabric will be firmly resisted.
Vijayan made these remarks while addressing the press on the eve of Christmas here.
“The acts of violence and intimidation directed at Christmas festivities are profoundly troubling and seek to overshadow a message of peace and humanity that resonates globally,” he commented.
He expressed concern over the widespread attacks on Christmas events in states such as Madhya Pradesh, Uttar Pradesh, Karnataka, Haryana, Odisha, Chhattisgarh, Bihar, and Jharkhand.
“It is alleged that these incidents are linked to the Sangh Parivar organizations,” Vijayan noted.
He criticized the cancellation of the Christmas holiday in Uttar Pradesh and the directive mandating the celebration of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee’s birth anniversary on the same day, requiring student attendance, calling it a disturbing precedent.
While Kerala has historically remained untouched by such practices, Vijayan remarked that recent occurrences in the state are worrisome.
He mentioned reports of Christmas celebrations in post offices being canceled after a union demanded the inclusion of patriotic songs in Christmas and New Year programs.
Additionally, he highlighted an assault on a carol group, which included children, in Pudussery in Palakkad district, alleging that the attack was perpetrated by individuals associated with the Sangh Parivar.
Vijayan stated that leaders from the BJP attempted to rationalize the attack by making derogatory remarks about carol groups.
“We have taken strict action against those involved in the Palakkad incident. There are also reports of pressure from RSS-affiliated groups leading to the cancellation of Christmas events in some private schools, with fees refunded to students,” he added.
The government has initiated an immediate investigation into these incidents and cautioned that stringent measures will be enforced against those who obstruct celebrations and educational institutions engaging in religious discrimination, he stated.
Characterizing the emergence of such forces in Kerala as a grave concern, Vijayan affirmed that any infringement on fundamental rights guaranteed by the Constitution is intolerable.
He also referenced a recent article in Organiser, the RSS’s publication, regarding church properties, alleging it showcased an agenda to foster communal animosity.
Vijayan emphasized that Kerala will staunchly oppose any attempts to undermine secularism and coexistence.
