Minister Chung Regrets Allegations of Information Leak Over Kusong Nuclear Reference
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Seoul, April 20 (NationPress) Unification Minister Chung Dong-young addressed the claims regarding his mention of North Korea's Kusong area as a site associated with the nation's nuclear activities, asserting that his comments were meant to clarify South Korea's policy towards North Korea. He expressed disappointment over accusations that his statements amounted to an information leak.
These comments come in the wake of allegations that he revealed sensitive information regarding North Korea after identifying Kusong as a location with uranium enrichment facilities during a parliamentary discussion last month.
As of now, only two areas—Yongbyon and Kusong—are officially acknowledged as uranium enrichment sites in North Korea, though both domestic and international researchers have occasionally highlighted Kusong as well.
"I referred to Kusong solely to illustrate the gravity of North Korea's nuclear situation. It's regrettable that this has been portrayed as an information leak," Chung informed the press.
Reportedly, the United States has raised concerns regarding Chung's comments, suggesting they were based on intelligence shared by Washington, leading to a halt in the sharing of satellite intelligence on North Korea with Seoul.
The Unification Ministry maintains that Chung's statements were derived from "publicly available information," including expert analyses and news articles, rather than classified intelligence from the U.S., according to Yonhap news agency.
"This is already public knowledge. I also mentioned Kusong during my confirmation hearing last year," the minister remarked, refuting the allegations of leaking sensitive information. "I suspect there may be ulterior motives behind this issue being raised now, after nine months have elapsed."
Chung emphasized that the national interest should be paramount in handling this matter, criticizing some for misleadingly crafting a narrative of a crisis in South Korea-US relations. He expressed optimism that both Seoul and Washington could resolve the issue effectively through clear communication.
