Delhi/Aizawl, April 21 (NationPress) The Central Industrial Security Force (CISF) is set to take over the security duties of Mizoram’s only airport - Lengpui - on April 24. This marks the establishment of its first unit in the state and the 69th civil airport under CISF protection since the year 2000, as confirmed by an official on Monday.
According to officials, a collaborative deployment involving Mizoram Police and CRPF will commence from April 21 to facilitate a seamless transition.
Situated near the borders of Myanmar and Bangladesh, Lengpui Airport plays a crucial role in India’s Act East Policy, which aims to improve connectivity and foster economic relations with Southeast Asia, as noted in an official statement.
The CISF’s proficiency in counterterrorism and aviation security will bolster national security, ensuring the safety of passengers and aiding in Mizoram’s economic development.
“This achievement enhances connectivity and underscores India’s commitment to safeguarding its northeastern aviation infrastructure. The presence of the CISF is anticipated to enhance confidence among travelers and airlines, which may lead to an increase in flight operations and further support Mizoram’s economic progress,” stated the official announcement.
Furthermore, this initiative not only fortifies India’s aviation security framework but also highlights the government’s dedication to integrating the northeastern region into the country’s growth narrative.
Lengpui Airport, managed by the state government, was inaugurated in 1998 and is located approximately 30 km north of Aizawl.
Previously, Chief Minister Lalduhoma mentioned that the state government is formulating the draft for a Memorandum of Agreement (MoA) as part of the consideration to transfer the Lengpui airport to the Indian Air Force (IAF).
While addressing queries from MLAs in the state assembly, he indicated that the committee responsible for the airport’s maintenance and management is in the process of drafting the MoA.
Once the draft is finalized, it will be presented to the state government for discussion in the Cabinet, leading to a final decision, as he stated.
Chief Minister Lalduhoma further informed the House that the government has allocated Rs 86 crore for the renovation and upgrading of the runway, alongside other essential development initiatives at the airport.
