New Delhi, Apr 7 (NationPress) On Monday, the Supreme Court of India formalized a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Supreme Court of Nepal aimed at enhancing and fortifying judicial collaboration between the two nations.

The MoU is designed to foster mutual exchange of information regarding the latest advancements in law and justice, as well as to facilitate interactions among judges and officials at various levels through initiatives such as exchange visits, short-term and long-term training, and academic programs,” stated a press release from the apex court.

Motivated by the warm and amicable ties between the two nations and their citizens, the MoU seeks to develop, enhance, and solidify cooperation between the judiciaries of both countries, the press release further elaborated.

Acknowledging the significance of technology in alleviating backlogs, accelerating court processes, and providing superior services to stakeholders, the MoU includes provisions for sharing information related to technological applications utilized in their respective courts and institutions.

A Joint Working Group comprising officials from both judiciaries will be established to devise plans and modalities for advancing and further strengthening judicial cooperation.

The MoU was executed in the presence of Chief Justice of Nepal Prakash Man Singh Raut and Chief Justice of India Sanjiv Khanna.

Previously, the Indian Union government and the Supreme Court of India have entered into MoUs for judicial collaboration with various countries, including the Supreme Court of Israel, Supreme Court of Singapore, Supreme Court of Bangladesh, and Supreme Court of Bhutan.

In September 2023, during his visit to Singapore, then-CJI D.Y. Chandrachud signed an MoU with the Supreme Court of Singapore on judicial cooperation. 'Both judiciaries signed an MoU on judicial partnership. The SG Courts look forward to a sustained friendship,' tweeted the official account of the Singapore Judiciary.
