Bengaluru, July 3 (NationPress) In response to the resignation of Additional Superintendent of Police, Narayana V Baramani, due to public humiliation after an alleged slap gesture by Karnataka Chief Minister Siddaramaiah during a convention on April 28, the Karnataka BJP has expressed that the CM's actions have significantly demoralised the entire police force.
Additional SP Baramani submitted his resignation on June 12, following the incident that took place in Belagavi during a Congress convention.
Leader of the Opposition, R. Ashoka, remarked on Thursday, "Mr. CM Siddaramaiah, was your gesture of raising your hand against Additional SP Narayana Baramani on a public stage a manifestation of your authority, arrogance, or desperation as your government struggles to maintain its reputation? I leave that for your self-reflection."
"Your actions have inflicted harm on the self-respect of a dedicated officer. It has demoralised the entire police department and has undermined the integrity of bureaucracy while shaking the confidence of civil services," Ashoka highlighted.
"Due to your missteps, your government — and you personally — are facing reputational decline almost daily. It’s time to abandon this reckless behavior. Resign and preserve what little dignity you have left," he added.
State BJP President and MLA B. Y. Vijayendra commented, "There is no room for dignified officers in Siddaramaiah’s administration."
"For respected and proactive officers, enduring public humiliation, reprimands from the stage, and facing suspension for issues beyond their control has become a regular occurrence under the Congress-led Karnataka government," Vijayendra criticized.
"Police officer Narayana Baramani, who faced public humiliation from the Chief Minister in Belagavi, has now made the painful choice to resign, feeling that despite his dedicated service, he cannot continue under such a flawed administration. This resignation is a profoundly unfortunate and distressing situation," Vijayendra stated.
Amid the backlash over the officer's resignation, the Karnataka government has not accepted it.
In his resignation letter addressed to the Additional Chief Secretary, Department of Home Affairs (Police Services), Government of Karnataka, Vidhana Soudha, Narayana Baramani expressed that he is voluntarily retiring due to the humiliation inflicted by the Chief Minister.
"Chief Minister Siddaramaiah raised his hand towards me in a threatening manner, attempting to strike me. I instinctively stepped back and narrowly avoided being slapped," the Additional SP recounted.
"A public insult from a Chief Minister is deeply troubling. If I, with 31 years of service as an Additional SP, must endure such disgrace, one can only imagine the plight of those in lower ranks. I regard this as a public insult and submit my resignation in protest against the Chief Minister’s behavior," he stated.
"Relatives and former colleagues have expressed their outrage. I was so overwhelmed that I remained indoors. My family was in tears upon seeing my distress. We couldn’t even talk; the day passed in silence. Neither the Chief Minister nor any official from his government or my department offered consolation. Even my colleagues did not express support or solidarity. This has deepened the emotional burden," the Additional SP added.
