New Delhi, Aug 12 (NationPress) The Indian National Congress has vehemently criticized the remarks made by Israel’s Ambassador to India regarding the comments of party leader and MP Priyanka Gandhi Vadra on the Gaza situation, labeling the envoy's response as “entirely unacceptable.”

In a statement shared on social media platform X (formerly Twitter), Congress general secretary responsible for communications, Jairam Ramesh, stated that the party “condemns the language used” by the Israeli envoy in reaction to Gandhi Vadra’s expression of “pain and anguish” concerning Israel’s actions in Gaza.

“The Indian National Congress condemns the comments made by Israel’s Ambassador to India in response to the pain and anguish expressed by Priyanka Gandhi Vadra, MP, about Israel's ongoing genocide in Gaza,” Ramesh remarked.

He criticized the Narendra Modi-led government for remaining silent on this issue for almost two years, accusing it of displaying “extreme moral cowardice” for failing to address what the Congress party refers to as Israel’s “destruction of Gaza” over the past 18–20 months.

“It is unreasonable to expect the Modi Government, which has shown extreme moral cowardice regarding Israel’s actions in Gaza for the last 18-20 months, to take substantial exception to the Ambassador's response. We do and find it totally unacceptable,” Ramesh added.

Earlier in the day, Priyanka Gandhi conveyed her distress over the catastrophic situation in Gaza, which has already claimed the lives of 60,000 individuals, including thousands of women and children.

“The Israeli state is committing genocide. Over 60,000 people have been murdered, of which 18,430 were children. Hundreds have starved to death, including many children, and millions are threatened with starvation. Remaining silent and inactive in the face of these crimes is itself a crime. It is shameful that the Indian Government remains silent as Israel wreaks havoc on the Palestinian people,” she stated on X.

In response to her tweet, Israel’s envoy Reuven Azar referred to it as “shameful deceit.”

“Israel has killed 25,000 Hamas terrorists. The tragic human cost arises from Hamas’s despicable tactics of using civilians as shields, shooting at those attempting to evacuate or receive aid, and their rocket fire. Israel has facilitated the entry of 2 million tonnes of food into Gaza while Hamas attempts to hoard these supplies, causing hunger. The population of Gaza has increased by 450 percent over the last 50 years; there is no genocide here. Don't trust Hamas's figures,” the envoy asserted on X.

The situation escalated as many social media users, including politicians and veterans, regarded the Israeli envoy’s reaction as crossing diplomatic boundaries.

Point of View

It is imperative to acknowledge that the Indian National Congress's condemnation of the Israeli envoy's remarks reflects a significant ethical stance amidst a humanitarian crisis. The Modi government's silence raises questions about its diplomatic integrity. It is crucial to navigate these complex international relations with a commitment to human rights and accountability.
