Congress Exits Baramati Bypoll: A Response to Maharashtra's Political Sentiments
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, April 9 (NationPress) In a notable shift within the political arena, the Maharashtra Pradesh Congress Committee (MPCC) has made a formal announcement regarding its decision to withdraw from the forthcoming Baramati Assembly by-election.
During a press briefing on Thursday, which marked the deadline for nomination withdrawals, State President Harshwardhan Sapkal confirmed this pivotal decision.
Scheduled for April 23, the bypoll was called due to the unfortunate passing of Deputy Chief Minister Ajit Pawar. Initially, Congress had nominated Akash More as their candidate, but the party has chosen to retract its candidacy, potentially leading to a less contested or even unopposed election.
In his address to the press, Sapkal articulated that the original choice to contest, made on March 15, was a strategic ideological stance against the BJP. Nevertheless, multiple heartfelt appeals from various political factions influenced their revised position. “Ajit Pawar was a prominent figure in Maharashtra politics, and his unexpected death has created a significant void,” Sapkal remarked.
“Despite our ideological opposition to the BJP, we must honor the cultural and emotional values of Maharashtra,” he continued.
Sapkal revealed that numerous senior leaders from the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction) and the Maha Vikas Aghadi (MVA) had contacted Congress leadership to urge the withdrawal. NCP president and Deputy CM Sunetra Pawar made several calls, including as recently as Wednesday and Thursday morning, underscoring the long-standing ties between Ajit Pawar and the Congress party. Prominent NCP figures like Chhagan Bhujbal and Dhananjay Munde also made personal appeals for maintaining political dignity and tradition, as stated by Sapkal.
The state Congress chief mentioned that Sharad Pawar, head of the NCP(SP), had provided guidance regarding this matter, and NCP(SP) Working President Supriya Sule echoed similar sentiments about honoring the late leader.
A breakthrough occurred following a meeting with Rohit Pawar, where he sought cooperation and expressed remorse over certain “immature remarks” made by others regarding Congress. “Ultimately, our senior leadership deliberated extensively. While we were ready to participate in this election, we have opted to prioritize unity, respect, and the political culture of Maharashtra,” Sapkal noted.
In a surprising development, Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis personally reached out to the opposition to discuss the Baramati Assembly by-election. Reliable sources indicate that CM Fadnavis made a direct phone call to Harshwardhan Sapkal, where he reportedly requested the Congress to withdraw its candidate to facilitate an unopposed election for Deputy CM Sunetra Pawar, who is contesting for the NCP (Ajit Pawar faction).
Moreover, Sharad Pawar, the NCP(SP) Chief, had discussions with Congress President Mallikarjun Kharge about the withdrawal of the party's candidate in Baramati.
Earlier, the Congress high command had indicated a positive consideration of the proposal to withdraw. Pawar informed reporters, “The Congress has decided to contest the by-election in Baramati. It is a national party. We cannot dictate their actions, but this seat became vacant following the demise of a capable representative from Maharashtra. If asked, I would advise Congress that it would be fitting for this election to be unopposed, but the decision ultimately rests with them.”
