Will the Congress High Command Stay Out of Karnataka's Leadership Crisis?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Dec 24 (NationPress) Congress MLA and former minister K.N. Rajanna, a close confidant of Chief Minister Siddaramaiah, expressed his belief on Wednesday that the party's high command may refrain from intervening in the ongoing leadership dilemma within the state.
Rajanna's comments are particularly noteworthy as Deputy Chief Minister Shivakumar is attempting to engage with the high command regarding the leadership conflict.
During a press briefing in Tumakuru, Rajanna noted that AICC President Mallikarjun Kharge had raised concerns about internal issues being directed toward the high command, suggesting that such matters ought to be settled within the state framework.
"Given Kharge's remarks, I am skeptical about whether the high command will get involved in this situation. Personally, I believe the high command will choose not to intervene," Rajanna stated.
Kharge made this assertion in Delhi on December 21.
Rajanna emphasized that while individual MLAs, including those from Ramanagara, have the freedom to voice their opinions, decisions regarding leadership ultimately lie with the high command.
Ramanagara MLA Iqbal Hussain, a strong supporter of Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar, has been advocating for a change in leadership.
He mentioned that any decisions regarding leadership alterations in Karnataka, including those affecting the Chief Minister and ministers, would rest solely with the party's high command, and the timing of such decisions remains uncertain.
On the topic of his correspondence with the Leader of the Opposition in the Lok Sabha, Rahul Gandhi, concerning the alleged 'vote theft' issue, Rajanna clarified that his remarks had been misconstrued.
Following his comments, Rajanna was unexpectedly removed from his cabinet position for allegedly contradicting Gandhi's position.
He clarified that his letter acknowledged the party's responsibilities, especially since Congress was in governance at that time.
He indicated that Booth Level Agents (BLAs), designated by the party, were responsible for overseeing voter lists and identifying discrepancies, while officials appointed Booth Level Officers (BLOs).
"Had our party leaders been more vigilant, the alleged vote theft might have been avoided," he remarked, encouraging a full reading of his statement.
Meanwhile, state Home Minister G. Parameshwara stated that decisions made by Mallikarjun Kharge, Rahul Gandhi, and Sonia Gandhi regarding leadership in the state are final.
He noted that Kharge's statement might have been aimed at preventing confusion.
Regarding Rajanna's letter to Rahul Gandhi, Parameshwara mentioned that he had yet to review it and would respond after doing so.
