New Delhi, Jan 27 (NationPress) Following the remarks made by Congress president Mallikarjun Kharge, which sparked controversy regarding Home Minister Amit Shah’s sacred bath at the Triveni Sangam in Prayagraj, another Congress figure from Maharashtra has also criticized Shah’s spiritual immersion in the Ganga, labeling it as a mere photo-op.
Husain Dalwai, the Congress representative from Maharashtra, expressed discontent over the Home Minister's involvement in the Maha Kumbh celebrations, asserting that his presence in the holy city was nothing more than a publicity stunt. He further suggested that Shah’s Ganga snan was essentially a ploy for garnering attention.
In a statement to IANS, Dalwai questioned, “Did the Home Minister visit the Ganga ghat to atone for his sins, or was it just a photo-op? It was merely for publicity.”
Continuing his critique of the Central Government, he added, “They ignore the common populace while relentlessly seeking opportunities to promote their image.”
This controversial comment comes amid backlash from Hindu organizations and religious figures for Dalwai's insensitive remarks concerning the Maha Kumbh.
Just a day prior, Dalwai ignited a significant debate by raising concerns about the cleanliness and health standards at the Maha Kumbh, warning that it could facilitate disease outbreaks.
“Countless individuals bathe in the Ganga. Consider the amount of filth. The unsanitary conditions in which devotees stay could trigger disease transmission,” he stated, advocating for infrastructure akin to that of the Haj pilgrimage in Prayagraj.
Earlier, Congress president Kharge had already stirred controversy by asserting that a sacred bath during the Maha Kumbh would not alleviate poverty in the nation.
His comments, aimed at the Home Minister’s sacred immersion at the Sangam, incited a strong reaction from the BJP and other factions, prompting him to retract his statement.
"I don't wish to challenge anyone's religious convictions. However, when a child is perishing from hunger, and laborers are deprived of their wages, these individuals are squandering thousands on competing for dips in the Ganga," Kharge expressed at a public gathering.
Kharge’s statements evoked a furious response from the BJP, which accused the Congress leader of disrespecting and belittling Sanatan Dharma.
“Do they dare question the beliefs and customs of any other religion? They wouldn’t even think of tampering with the faith of another religion. Such comments are disgraceful. How can the Congress maintain such an anti-Sanatan perspective?” questioned BJP spokesperson Sambit Patra.
