Should Congress Leaders Avoid Public Discussion of Party Matters?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, Jan 22 (NationPress) The Congress leadership has reiterated that indiscipline and the public discussion of internal party matters will not be accepted.
This directive came following a meeting of senior Congress leaders at the residence of party president Mallikarjun Kharge, which he chaired. Attendees included Rahul Gandhi, the Leader of Opposition in the Lok Sabha, alongside key figures like KC Venugopal, Bhupesh Baghel, and Ambika Soni, among others.
Representatives from Punjab included Amarinder Singh Raja Warring, the PCC president, Partap Singh Bajwa, the Leader of Opposition in the Vidhan Sabha, Charanjit Singh Channi, the former Chief Minister, as well as several other prominent leaders.
After a thorough three-hour discussion, KC Venugopal informed the press that the meeting was productive, with all Punjab leaders sharing their perspectives. He emphasized the importance of discipline and urged leaders to avoid public commentary on party affairs, which should only be addressed within party circles. Clear instructions were provided to prevent such statements, he noted.
Addressing speculations on leadership changes in Punjab, Venugopal firmly stated, “There is no question of any leadership change in Punjab.”
When asked about reports of around 30 Punjab leaders requesting meetings with the high command, he clarified that there’s nothing inappropriate about leaders meeting with the leadership individually.
However, he stressed that any form of groupism would not be tolerated. He added that both Kharge and Rahul Gandhi would visit Punjab for events where leaders could meet them.
Regarding representation for Dalits, Venugopal affirmed the party's commitment to ensuring adequate representation for marginalized groups, including SCs, STs, OBCs, and economically disadvantaged individuals from the general category across the nation.
Highlighting the need for unity, he stated, “The Congress party is one. We are together, and we will remain together. Everybody is one. The Congress will fight the Punjab elections unitedly, and we will win with the support of the people of Punjab, ‘Araam Se’.”
Bhupesh Baghel remarked that the discussions reflected a strong public sentiment in Punjab favoring the Congress's return to power.
He reiterated that there would be zero tolerance for groupism or any form of indiscipline, asserting that the party would contest the elections under a collective leadership structure, with Mallikarjun Kharge and Rahul Gandhi as the primary figures.
