Congress MP and Assam Pradesh Congress Committee president Gaurav Gogoi on Wednesday said the party has launched a wide-ranging organisational overhaul across Assam, aimed at sharpening grassroots presence and political messaging ahead of the next Lok Sabha elections. Gogoi made the remarks while addressing reporters in Guwahati, citing lessons drawn from recent electoral setbacks.

Context: A Party Regrouping After Heavy Losses

The Indian National Congress suffered its worst-ever performance in Assam in the recently concluded Assembly elections, a result that prompted a detailed internal review. Following an assessment of the Panchayat elections as well, the party identified critical gaps in grassroots outreach and political communication that it now intends to address before the next general election cycle.

What the Rebuilding Exercise Involves

According to Gogoi, discussions are underway at multiple levels of the party structure, including district units, to map out a clear roadmap. He acknowledged that while organisational strategies had been drawn up earlier, several key initiatives had remained unimplemented. The current push is aimed at closing that gap and injecting fresh energy into the party machinery.

The Congress is also actively engaging with tribal communities, Scheduled Castes, and other social groups across the state. Gogoi said feedback gathered from these communities would directly inform the party's future programmes and political priorities.

Gogoi's Allegations Against the BJP

Targeting the ruling Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP), Gogoi alleged that the party was more focused on weakening opposition forces than on addressing pressing governance challenges. He claimed the BJP lacked a coherent strategy for ensuring social harmony and driving economic development in the state.

On tribal issues specifically, Gogoi alleged that the government had repeatedly sidelined community concerns over land rights and development projects, leaving several groups feeling unprotected. The BJP has not responded publicly to these allegations.

Congress Committed to Opposition Role

Despite the scale of recent defeats, Gogoi maintained that the Congress would continue to function as a robust opposition force in Assam, raising issues that affect ordinary citizens. He asserted the party's commitment to broadening its connect with voters across the state in preparation for future electoral contests.

This comes amid a broader national effort by the Congress to rebuild state-level organisations following a string of election losses. How effectively the party translates its review findings into organisational action on the ground will be the real test ahead of the next Lok Sabha cycle.
