Bengaluru, April 3 (NationPress) The Special Court for MLAs/MPs on Thursday dismissed the request made by the main accused in the Karnataka obscene video scandal -- former MP Prajwal Revanna -- to eliminate charges against him in a rape case.
Revanna is the grandson of former Prime Minister H.D. Deve Gowda.
The court has postponed the next steps in the case to April 9.
Last month, Revanna submitted a petition to the court asking to have the rape charges against him dropped, asserting that he played no part in the incident reported by a victim from K.R. Nagar.
Upon the judge announcing the rejection of his plea, Revanna broke down in the courtroom, shaking his head and joining his hands in a gesture of innocence.
Charges have already been filed against him by the investigating authorities, and the court is set to commence proceedings based on the chargesheet starting April 9.
Currently, Revanna is incarcerated in Bengaluru Central Prison located in Parappana Agrahara.
He was apprehended at Bengaluru International Airport in the early hours of May 30, 2024, while returning from Germany after his grandfather H.D. Deve Gowda and uncle H.D. Kumaraswamy -- who is also the Union Minister for Heavy Industries and Steel -- publicly urged him to return and face the authorities.
His father, JD-S legislator H.D. Revanna, has also been imprisoned. Both Revanna and his mother Bhavani Revanna are currently out on bail concerning the kidnapping and rape case linked to the sex video scandal. His younger brother, JD(S) MLC Suraj Revanna, who was jailed for allegedly sexually assaulting male party workers, is also out on bail.
A total of four cases related to sexual assault and rape have been filed against Prajwal Revanna. His bail applications have been denied in all instances.
The prosecution has charged Prajwal Revanna under various sections, including 354 (A) (sexual harassment), 354 (B) (Assault or use of criminal force on a woman with an intent to disrobe her), 354 (C) (An act of watching or capturing a woman’s image while she is engaging in a private act), 376 (2) (N) (Aggravated form of rape committed by police officers and other public servants in charge, repeatedly raping the same woman), 376 (2) (K) (Being in a position of control or dominance over a woman, committing rape), 506 (Criminal intimidation), 201 (Causing disappearance of evidence) of the IPC, and Section 66 (E) of the IT Act.
The Special Investigation Team (SIT) investigating the sexual assault video case involving Prajwal Revanna submitted a comprehensive 2,144-page chargesheet to the Special Court for MLAs/MPs in August of the previous year.
