Kolkata, March 16 (NationPress) The Communist Party of India-Marxist-Leninist (CPI-ML), a significant Left entity in Bihar, is set to contest in 10 Assembly constituencies across West Bengal in coalition with the CPI-M-led Left Front during the upcoming two-phase Assembly elections scheduled for next month.

The CPI-ML's state committee in West Bengal released a press statement on Monday, indicating that their decision to ally with the Left Front aims to achieve two main goals: to end the “corrupt” governance of the Trinamool Congress and to thwart the advance of what they characterize as the “fascist” BJP-RSS coalition.

“This choice is also focused on reviving Left politics within the state. Following extensive discussions with Biman Bose, the chairman of the Left Front in West Bengal, and the leadership of the CPI(M), we have resolved to field candidates in 10 Assembly constituencies this election cycle. The specific constituencies will be disclosed later,” the statement elaborated.

Previously, in the 2021 West Bengal Assembly elections, the CPI-ML participated without any collaborative agreements or seat-sharing arrangements with the Left Front.

At that time, the CPI-ML leadership criticized the CPI-M for treating the Trinamool Congress and the BJP as equivalent threats.

Moreover, the CPI-ML urged the electorate in West Bengal to choose any political force except the BJP.

In a related development, the Congress has opted to discontinue its seat-sharing arrangement with the Left Front, which had been ongoing since the 2016 Assembly elections, and will independently contest all 294 Assembly seats.

On Monday, the Left Front unveiled its initial list of candidates for 192 Assembly constituencies, with additional names to be announced later.

The CPI-M continues its collaboration with the All India Secular Front (AISF) in seat-sharing.

The Assembly elections in West Bengal will take place in two phases on April 23 and April 29, with results scheduled for announcement on May 4.

Point of View

It is crucial to observe the evolving political dynamics in West Bengal, particularly with the CPI-ML's alliance with the Left Front. This strategic collaboration seeks to challenge the dominant forces in the state and could potentially reshape the electoral landscape, reflecting a broader trend of Left resurgence amidst rising political contestation.
