Surat, Sep 4 (NationPress) Union Minister of Jal Shakti, C.R. Paatil, who also serves as the chief of BJP in Gujarat, emphasized the significant advantages of GST reforms, the success of the "Catch the Rain" campaign, and the city's accomplishments in maintaining civic cleanliness during a press briefing. He noted that the Goods and Services Tax has fundamentally altered India's economic framework by creating a unified market across the nation.
“Prior to 2017, each state operated its own tax system, which complicated compliance and allowed for misuse. GST has realized the vision of ‘One Nation, One Tax’, streamlined trade, minimized redundant taxes, and enhanced transparency,” he stated.
Paatil pointed out that the number of registered GST taxpayers surged from 66.5 lakh in 2017 to 2.51 crore by 2025, significantly increasing government revenue and bolstering global confidence in India’s economy.
The recent decision by the Council to simplify GST categories into two primary slabs -- 5% and 18% -- along with a special rate of 40% for luxury items, is expected to provide relief to everyday citizens.
Essential items, textiles, and insurance services will benefit from reduced tax rates, which Paatil referred to as a “Diwali gift” from Prime Minister Narendra Modi, effective from September 22.
Discussing infrastructure, Paatil announced that Surat airport will receive new equipment to mitigate flight diversions during inclement weather and improve passenger facilities, following talks with the Aviation Ministry.
Regarding the Jal Shakti Ministry’s flagship initiative, the "Catch the Rain" program, Paatil stated that over 32 lakh water harvesting structures have been established across 611 districts in 33 states, achieved without Central funding, relying instead on CSR and community engagement.
Migrant communities from Rajasthan, Madhya Pradesh, Bihar, and Saurashtra residing in Surat have played a pivotal role, constructing thousands of structures in their home villages under the Prime Minister’s call of “Karmabhoomi to Matrubhoomi.”
C.R. Paatil also praised Surat’s sanitation workers and officials, attributing their efforts to the city being ranked first in cleanliness, surpassing Indore.
He announced the establishment of a special fund to support the education of sanitation workers’ children and interest-free loans for housing and vehicles.
A special recognition event for workers is planned for September 17 at the Indore stadium in Surat.
State Home Minister Harsh Sanghavi also participated in the press conference, unveiling a multimedia play inspired by the life of Prime Minister Modi. This 2.5-hour performance, crafted by a team of 400 with music and visual effects, will debut on September 7 in Surat and subsequently tour other districts.
