New Delhi, Feb 12 (NationPress) The Delhi Education Minister, Ashish Sood, announced on Thursday that Chief Minister Rekha Gupta will formally kick off "Khelo Delhi – Delhi Khel Mahakumbh" on Friday, aimed at enhancing and fostering a dynamic sports culture in the capital, inspired by the Khelo India initiative.

The Delhi government is set to host competitions in seven prominent sports disciplines during the initial phase of the Mahakumbh, such as football, basketball, volleyball, kabaddi, among others.
These events will take place across 17 major stadiums in Delhi, including Chhatrasal Stadium, Bawana, Najafgarh, Vikaspuri, South Delhi, and various other notable venues.
Minister Sood confirmed that the official inauguration will occur on Friday at Chhatrasal Stadium, with Chief Minister Gupta presiding over the ceremony.
The opening ceremony is poised to showcase a spectacular march-past featuring Delhi's para-athletes.
Highlighting the significant level of engagement, Minister Sood mentioned that over 16,000 athletes have already registered, with registration still open.
The objective of the Delhi government is to secure participation from over 30,000 athletes in this month-long sports extravaganza, with plans to increase participation to over 100,000 grassroots athletes annually in future editions.
Emphasizing the importance of women's involvement, the Education Minister noted that the Mahakumbh will create substantial opportunities for female athletes.
“Women's safety and participation will be prioritized. Greater involvement of women in sports will have a positive impact, encouraging more females to engage actively,” he stated.
Minister Sood remarked that sports promote discipline among youth, playing a vital role in steering them away from substance abuse and other societal issues.
“This initiative will not only identify emerging talent but will also establish structured pathways to support their development at both national and international levels,” he added.
In an exciting announcement, the international cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has been appointed as the Brand Ambassador of the Delhi Khel Mahakumbh, aimed at motivating young athletes and fostering enthusiasm for sports among the youth.
