New Delhi, Feb 13 (NationPress) On Friday, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta is set to launch Khelo Delhi – Delhi Khel Mahakumbh, modeled after Khelo India, aiming to cultivate and enhance a dynamic sports culture in the capital.
On Thursday, the Delhi Education Minister, Ashish Sood, facilitated an engaging dialogue concerning the forthcoming Delhi Khel Mahakumbh. He conveyed his appreciation to the attendees, declaring that while Delhi is rich in talent, it necessitates appropriate opportunities and platforms.
The interaction witnessed over 50 sports influencers from all over India, including Arjuna Awardees, fitness trainers, and notable sports figures.
The Delhi government is set to host competitions in seven prominent sports disciplines in the Mahakumbh's initial phase, including football, basketball, volleyball, kabaddi, and several other selected events.
These competitions will take place across 17 major stadiums in Delhi, such as Chhatrasal Stadium, Bawana, Najafgarh, Vikaspuri, South Delhi, and other key venues.
Minister Sood announced that the official inauguration will occur on Friday at Chhatrasal Stadium, officiated by Chief Minister Gupta.
The opening ceremony promises a grand march-past featuring Delhi's para-athletes.
Minister Sood highlighted the impressive participation scale, noting that over 16,000 athletes have already registered, with registration still in progress.
"The Delhi government aims to engage over 30,000 athletes in this month-long sports festival. In the coming years, we aspire to expand participation to over 100,000 grassroots athletes annually," he affirmed.
The Education Minister stressed that the Mahakumbh will serve as a vital platform for female athletes as well.
"We will ensure women's safety and participation are prioritized. Enhanced involvement of women in sports will foster a positive ripple effect, motivating more women to engage actively," he stated.
Minister Sood remarked that sports instill discipline among the youth and significantly help them steer clear of substance abuse and other societal issues.
"This initiative aims not only to identify emerging talent but also to implement structured efforts that support their advancement to national and international levels," he added.
Furthermore, Minister Sood revealed that international cricketer Shikhar Dhawan has been appointed as the Brand Ambassador of Delhi Khel Mahakumbh to inspire young athletes and ignite enthusiasm for sports among the youth.
