Lucknow, April 13 (NationPress) On Monday, Defence Minister Rajnath Singh expressed his enthusiasm for the growing involvement of women in sports, believing that the MP Khel Mahakumbh held here will enhance the sporting culture in Lucknow and throughout Uttar Pradesh.
While addressing athletes, Rajnath Singh remarked, “Lucknow has always been celebrated for its vibrant sporting culture. The establishment of the MP Khel Mahakumbh aims at further nurturing this culture.”
He added, “I am committed to expanding the sporting amenities available in Lucknow.”
The Defence Minister noted that modern sports facilities are also being developed in rural areas. Improved grounds, state-of-the-art stadiums, and advanced training centers are being established even in remote parts of the country.
“In Uttar Pradesh, significant investments amounting to thousands of crores of rupees are being allocated for sports initiatives,” he stated.
He highlighted the positive trend of increased female participation in sports through the 'Khelo India' program, mentioning that the 'Khelo India Women's League' is currently taking place in multiple cities, showcasing impressive female involvement.
In a post on X, the Defence Minister and MP from Lucknow shared, “I had the honor of attending the closing ceremony of the MP Khel Mahakumbh in Lucknow. Inspired by Prime Minister Shri @narendramodi, this event has occurred for the second consecutive year, engaging thousands of youth in various sports.”
Under the Khelo India campaign, the government has already invested nearly Rs five thousand crores in sports infrastructure, making it easier for more athletes to engage in sports.
He emphasized that a new chapter in Indian sports has begun over the past decade, which not only aims to position India as a leading sports nation but also signifies a new wave of social empowerment through sports.
“Sports education is now part of our National Education Policy. The launch of the country's first National Sports University will further facilitate this development,” he noted on X.
“The Khelo India initiative has rejuvenated the dignity of traditional Indian sports. The government is also offering scholarships to encourage various disciplines such as Gatka, Mallakhamb, Thang-Ta, Kalaripayattu, and Yogasan, promoting a diverse sporting culture,” he concluded.
