New Delhi, May 20 (NationPress) In a bid to secure sports talent within the city, Chief Minister Rekha Gupta announced on Tuesday her commitment to establishing a Delhi Sports Council aimed at improving facilities for students and ensuring increased budgetary allocation for the forthcoming Delhi Sports University.
During the inaugural ceremony of Delhi Games 2025, organized by the Delhi Olympic Association, CM Gupta remarked, “The facilities for athletes under previous administrations were inadequate, resulting in many having to seek registration in other states. However, this government is determined to rectify this by doubling the budget allocated for sports facilities.”
Promising top-notch amenities for the 12,000 athletes participating in 40 events over a week during the Delhi Games, the CM stated that the newly proposed sports council would cater to their future requirements, ensuring that every athlete dedicating time to their discipline receives the respect and recognition they deserve.
“The Delhi Games represent the pride of our city, and our athletes warrant every essential amenity for their development. The government is actively working to enhance this by establishing a robust support system through the Delhi Sports Council,” she added.
“We aspire for Delhi athletes to remain in the city and achieve greatness for it,” she remarked.
At the ceremony, she acknowledged the decline in the quality of education and sports over the years in Delhi, emphasizing the government's resolve to initiate change.
“Our aim is to provide superior stadiums, advanced technology, and comprehensive support for our athletes, including a fourfold increase in prize money for the Delhi Games,” she stated.
She noted that athletes in the national capital deserve the facilities they need, adding, “Delhi players were compelled to represent other states due to inadequate honorarium and amenities.”
Referencing Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s vision for a ‘Fit India’ through sports, the CM noted, “PM Modi consistently motivates MPs and MLAs to advocate for sports. For me, the Delhi Games are intertwined with Delhi Fame.”
Encouraging coaches and athletes to take the lead, the CM mentioned the government's intention to utilize the public-private partnership (PPP) model for the optimal use of sports infrastructure available in governmental institutions.
