New Delhi, Dec 25 (NationPress) The Delhi government is set to inaugurate 100 Atal Canteens throughout the national capital today, providing meals at an astonishingly low price of Rs 5, in celebration of the birth anniversary of former Prime Minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee.

This initiative, a significant promise outlined in the BJP’s Delhi election manifesto, aims to deliver affordable and nutritious meals to residents across the city.

Delhi Urban Development Minister Ashish Sood announced the launch on Wednesday, deeming it a pivotal stride towards achieving food security for the disadvantaged.

The canteens are primarily aimed at daily wage workers, labourers, and low-income families who find it challenging to afford basic meals.

Chief Minister Rekha Gupta stated that the initiative is grounded in the philosophy of providing food with dignity.

“Atal Canteen will symbolize the essence of Delhi, a space where no individual should have to endure hunger,” she emphasized, highlighting the government’s dedication to inclusive welfare.

Each Atal Canteen will offer two meals daily, comprising dal and rice, roti with vegetables, and is anticipated to serve nearly 1,000 individuals each day.

The government intends to significantly subsidize the program to maintain the meal price at Rs 5, as per officials.

Government sources report that an inter-departmental committee has already established locations, menus, and operational guidelines for the first phase, encompassing 100 canteens.

The objective is to guarantee consistency and quality across all locations from the outset.

To foster transparency and prevent irregularities, meal distribution will utilize a digital token system instead of manual coupons. CCTV cameras will be installed in all canteens, with real-time monitoring facilitated through the Delhi Urban Shelter Improvement Board’s digital platform.

The kitchens will come equipped with LPG-based stoves, industrial-grade RO water systems, and cold storage facilities.

Officials indicated that food samples will undergo regular testing by FSSAI and NABL-accredited laboratories, while operators must submit monthly reports that detail hygiene standards, staff health, and overall safety compliance.

The Chief Minister mentioned that the initiative is inspired by Vajpayee’s belief that “poverty is not just a lack of money, but a lack of opportunity.”

She added that the scheme aims to ensure every citizen in Delhi can access nutritious food without sacrificing their self-respect or dignity.

“This is not charity, it’s about fairness,” Gupta affirmed. “Workers who contribute to building this city shouldn’t have to skip meals to survive in it.”

Once the initial phase is operational, the Delhi government plans to expand the Atal Canteen network based on public demand and feedback.

Officials further noted the program is expected to create job opportunities, particularly through self-help groups and local community kitchens that will manage and operate the canteens.
