Synopsis

Delhi Police have launched an investigation into a vehicle marked 'Punjab government' found with cash and liquor. The Punjab government refutes the claims, stating the vehicle's registration is forged and it does not match the registered model.

Key Takeaways

  • Delhi Police investigated a vehicle with a 'Punjab government' label.
  • Cash and liquor were seized from the vehicle.
  • The Punjab government claims the vehicle has a fake registration plate.
  • AAP pamphlets were also found in the car.
  • The incident occurs amid strict cash limits before Assembly elections.

New Delhi, Jan 30 (NationPress) Delhi Police have initiated an investigation after a vehicle marked "Punjab government" was stopped, revealing cash, liquor, and Aam Aadmi Party (AAP) pamphlets, according to an official statement. The Punjab government has claimed that the car displayed a fake registration plate and does not match the registered model.

The vehicle was discovered on Wednesday, and authorities seized a significant quantity of cash and liquor, as stated by the police.

Officials reported that the car bore a "Punjab government" sticker, and AAP pamphlets were located inside it.

Delhi Police noted that the vehicle was parked outside Punjab Bhawan on Copernicus Marg in the national capital. Upon inspection, the officers discovered cash totaling Rs 8 lakh, liquor bottles with Punjab stamps, and AAP literature within the car.

In accordance with the model code of conduct currently in effect in Delhi ahead of the Assembly elections, individuals are prohibited from carrying more than Rs 50,000 in cash.

A case has been filed at the Tilak Marg police station.

Following the incident, the Punjab government quickly issued a denial. They stated that the vehicle is officially registered to Major Anubhav Shivpuri, who was assigned to the Army Dental College in Pathankot three years prior. He is a permanent resident of Khadki in Maharashtra, the statement noted.

"It has come to our attention that a vehicle with registration number PB35AE1342 was seized in Delhi carrying illegal liquor and unaccounted cash. Media reports claim that the vehicle had a sticker indicating it belonged to the Punjab government," the statement read.

The Punjab government asserted that the registered vehicle corresponding to registration number PB35AE1342 is a Ford Eco Sport manufactured in 2018, while the actual vehicle seized by police is a Hyundai Creta. This discrepancy confirms that the vehicle's number plate is forged. High-Security Registration Plate (HSRP) is mandatory for all vehicles, and the registration plate shown in the video lacks HSRP features, making it easy to counterfeit. After reviewing their records, they found that no such vehicle is owned or leased by the Government of Punjab. Therefore, the apprehended vehicle does not belong to the Government of Punjab.

The AAP also issued a statement, describing the car seizure as a "planted stunt and utterly bogus".
