Bomb Threat Email Triggers Security Alert at Delhi Secretariat
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 9 (NationPress) The Delhi Secretariat received a threatening email on Thursday indicating a potential bomb threat, as reported by officials. A comprehensive search operation was swiftly initiated, and currently, no suspicious items have been identified.
The alarming email suggested the possibility of a bomb on the premises, which led Secretariat officials to promptly alert law enforcement.
Upon notification, police units, fire brigade teams, a bomb disposal squad, and a canine unit arrived at the location to perform an exhaustive search.
As per police statements, "At this moment, nothing suspicious has been uncovered."
Moreover, officials revealed that the email referenced the term 'Khalistan'.
The search continues while authorities are investigating the origin of the email.
This incident follows closely after a security lapse at the Delhi Assembly earlier this week, where an individual forcefully entered through a high-security gate.
On Monday (April 6), a man breached the high-security gates of the complex and managed to escape without facing any challenge.
He was later identified as Sarabjit Singh, who drove from Pilibhit to Chandigarh and then to Delhi.
However, within hours of the search operation, Delhi Police apprehended the suspect in North Delhi and confiscated the vehicle he used to access the Assembly by crashing through Gate No 2.
A Delhi court subsequently placed Singh in police custody for eight days following his presentation before the Judicial Magistrate.
The police requested custody to investigate an alleged conspiracy, including why Singh entered the Assembly, potential accomplices, and to explore any possible connections to terrorism, according to officials.
Additionally, the police informed the Tiz Hazari court that they have yet to recover Singh's phone, which he allegedly discarded.
Investigating authorities have indicated to the court that Singh may be experiencing mental health issues.
However, the defense attorney contested the request for police custody, arguing that Singh is mentally unstable and undergoing treatment. The lawyer added that Singh had unexpectedly traveled to Chandigarh to visit his sister without notifying anyone and had also been to a local gurdwara.
The defense claimed that Singh mistakenly entered the Assembly, believing it to be a gurdwara.
Investigations into the matter are ongoing.
