Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, March 24 (NationPress) The Delhi Legislative Assembly and Speaker Vijender Gupta received a new bomb threat through email on Tuesday, instigating an urgent investigation by the Delhi Police.
Officials reported that the threatening email asserted plans to blow up the Delhi Legislative Assembly. A similar threat was also directed at a nearby Delhi Metro station. The email sent to the Speaker's official account arrived at 7:49 a.m., while another ominous message reached the Assembly's official email at 7:28 a.m.
This communication reportedly referenced several prominent individuals, including Lieutenant Governor Taranjit Singh Sandhu, Prime Minister Narendra Modi, Union Home Minister Amit Shah, External Affairs Minister S. Jaishankar, Delhi Chief Minister Rekha Gupta, and Cabinet Minister Manjinder Singh Sirsa.
The police have commenced a comprehensive investigation to identify the source of the emails and evaluate the threat's validity. Security measures have been intensified around the Assembly and adjacent areas as a precautionary step.
This incident is not isolated. On February 23, Speaker Vijender Gupta had also received a similar threat via email from supposed supporters of “Khalistan,” claiming a potential bomb attack aimed at him and the Vidhan Sabha Secretariat. Following that warning, the Speaker's office quickly notified the Delhi Police Commissioner, leading to necessary security protocols being established.
The previous email was allegedly dispatched by a group identifying itself as the “Khalistan National Army” and coincided with the Speaker's referral of an issue to the Committee of Privileges. This matter involved video clips of remarks made by Leader of Opposition Atishi in the Assembly, which were considered disrespectful toward Sikh Gurus.
The latest threat arises on a significant day, as the Delhi government is poised to unveil its Budget for the 2026-27 fiscal year in the Assembly. This Budget is anticipated to emphasize vital sectors including education, healthcare, electricity and water subsidies, women's welfare, and infrastructure development.
Officials suggested that the Budget, projected at approximately Rs 1.10 lakh crore, may introduce initiatives aimed at providing relief to the populace, along with new programs to stimulate development. Chief Minister and Finance Minister Rekha Gupta is slated to present her government's second budget.
