Delhi Assembly Incident: Sarabjit Singh in Police Custody for Eight Days
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 7 (NationPress) A court in Delhi has remanded Sarabjit Singh, the individual accused of crashing his vehicle into the boundary gates of the Delhi Legislative Assembly, into eight days of police custody. This decision followed his appearance before the Judicial Magistrate on Tuesday.
Wearing a mask, Singh breached the high-security gates of the Assembly complex on Monday and escaped without immediate confrontation. However, within hours, the Delhi Police successfully located and apprehended him in North Delhi. The vehicle used to forcefully enter the premises by breaking through Gate No. 2 was also confiscated.
Authorities sought his remand to investigate a potential conspiracy, focusing on the reasons and methods behind Singh's entry into the Assembly, any other individuals who may be involved, and to explore any potential terrorism implications, as stated by officials.
During the proceedings at the Tiz Hazari court, police disclosed that they had yet to recover Singh's phone, which he reportedly discarded.
Investigators indicated to the court that Singh may be experiencing mental health issues.
However, Singh's legal representative contested the request for police custody, asserting that Singh is undergoing treatment for his mental instability. The lawyer informed the court that Singh had unexpectedly traveled to Chandigarh to visit his sister, without notifying anyone, and had also visited a local gurdwara.
According to Singh's counsel, he made the journey to Chandigarh approximately 14–15 days ago. He returned to Delhi after hearing about his nephew's disappearance.
The defense claimed that Singh mistakenly entered the Assembly, believing it to be a gurdwara.
Despite Singh's self-driving from Pilibhit to Chandigarh and then to Delhi, the court expressed skepticism regarding the assertion of his mental instability.
Additionally, two other individuals allegedly connected to the security breach were arrested the same day.
