BJP's Bansuri Swaraj: Delimitation Paves Way for Women’s Reservation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
In New Delhi, on April 16, Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) MP Bansuri Swaraj asserted that the anticipated Delimitation Bill represents a significant stride towards realizing women's reservation in India. During a lengthy discussion in the Lok Sabha on the topics of women's representation and delimitation, Swaraj stated, "The upcoming 2024 elections will witness a higher number of female voters compared to their male counterparts."
She challenged the Opposition leaders who oppose this Bill, questioning, "Do you wish to restrict women's participation as voters?"
The BJP representative expressed astonishment at the Opposition's prior support for the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam in 2023, asking, "If they backed that, why are they now resisting its implementation by 2029?"
Addressing remarks made by Lok Sabha Leader of Opposition Rahul Gandhi regarding the Women's Reservation Bill, Swaraj emphasized, "This Bill is designed to honor our commitments."
On Gandhi's claim that the Bill constitutes a "power grab," she countered, "This is less about seizing power and more about achieving a balance of power."
Swaraj urged the House to transcend political biases and pass the Bill with unanimous support.
Responding to Samajwadi Party Chief Akhilesh Yadav's accusations that the Bill is being hurried by the Union government to bypass a caste count, Swaraj remarked, "Following a delay of 40 hours, how can they claim the Bill is being rushed?"
The BJP MP also pointed out that elections should not serve as an excuse to undermine women's rights, stating, "Delimitation has been misrepresented as a source of fear. Let me clarify that it is not a conspiracy by the BJP but a necessary constitutional process."
Labeling women's reservation as the ultimate aim, Swaraj stated, "The implementation of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is the true goal, while delimitation serves as merely the means to achieve it. We must not confuse the journey for the destination. Now is the time to finalize this journey."
She underscored that reservation cannot exist in theory alone.
"It must be enacted in specific constituencies," she noted.
She insisted that for the successful application of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, both delimitation and an increase in the number of Lok Sabha seats are crucial.
Furthermore, she reassured that no state's share will diminish with the rise in Lok Sabha seats.
