'Political Stunt': Kalyan Banerjee Accuses Centre of Deceiving Women on Reservation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 17 (NationPress) Trinamool Congress MP Kalyan Banerjee unleashed a fierce condemnation of the Narendra Modi administration on Friday, alleging that it has misled and short-changed 'Nari Shakti' by intertwining women's reservation with the Delimitation Bill, thus hindering progress on one issue for the sake of another.
During a lengthy debate on three controversial Bills on Day 2 in the Parliament, the Trinamool MP labeled it as a "complete charade" and insisted that it was merely a political stunt orchestrated by the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP).
Kalyan Banerjee also challenged the Centre's "commitment and capability" to grant women their rights and urged them to present a plan for achieving 50 percent reservation.
"Implementing women's reservation can be accomplished swiftly; the issue lies in your lack of courage and genuine intent. Announce a 50 percent reservation for women, and we will support it immediately," he asserted.
Highlighting the difference in women's representation between the Trinamool Congress and the BJP, Kalyan Banerjee stated that the latter should embody the ideals it espouses.
He criticized the BJP's "disappointing record" on women's representation within the party and Parliament, contrasting it with Trinamool Congress, where he claimed that women hold over 40 percent of the membership.
"In 2023, you (BJP) stated that women’s reservation would follow the Delimitation and Census, but by announcing it last night, you have turned the entire Parliamentary democracy into a farce," Kalyan Banerjee commented.
The Trinamool Congress MP further emphasized that constitutional procedures must be upheld to maintain democratic integrity, citing the historical sequence of Census preceding Delimitation.
"The first delimitation occurred in 1953 (Census in 1951), followed by the second in 1963 (Census in 1961), the third in 1973 (Census in 1971), and the fourth in 2002 (Census in 2001)," he elaborated to the House.
Kalyan Banerjee launched a direct assault on the Union government, insisting that women’s reservation should adhere to constitutional norms rather than political convenience.
"Women’s reservation is not negotiable; 'Nari Shakti' deserves to be honored and respected," he remarked, gesturing towards the Treasury benches.
Further mocking Prime Minister Narendra Modi and Lok Sabha Speaker Om Birla, Kalyan Banerjee suggested that an easy solution would be to implement 50 percent representation for women across all Ministries.
"The Prime Minister's position should also be reserved for women, and the Speaker's position could similarly be designated, as the BJP is unlikely to regain power in 2029. We fully endorse 50 percent reservation for women," he quipped sarcastically.
"Delimitation is merely a political ploy; you lack the intention to provide reservation to women, and the BJP along with the Prime Minister is engaging in a farce regarding women's reservation," the Trinamool Congress MP asserted.
Kalyan Banerjee also criticized the scheduling of a special session of Parliament amidst elections, labeling it a blatant attack on democracy that creates an uneven playing field for political parties, as many are preoccupied with state elections.
