Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Mumbai, April 13 (NationPress) Following Prime Minister Narendra Modi's outreach to political factions to garner support for an amendment to the Women’s Reservation Act, leaders from various parties expressed their robust endorsement for this initiative, referring to the ‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ as urgently needed.
In a conversation with IANS, Supriya Sule, MP from NCP(SP), acknowledged receipt of the letter and reaffirmed her party's ongoing commitment to the legislation.
“I have received a letter from PM Modi. The Women’s Reservation Bill, which the Prime Minister is advocating, has always had our backing, including from the NCP(SP). We have supported it in the past, support it now, and will continue to do so. We firmly advocate for it, but I urge the government to clarify the specifics of its implementation,” she stated.
Shiv Sena spokesperson Shaina NC highlighted the Bill's significance, stating, “‘Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam’ is essential at this juncture. Women in our nation have waited for 27 years. If we can contest 181 seats in the forthcoming Lok Sabha elections, it would be a fitting homage, as opportunity enables the display of one’s capabilities.”
Meanwhile, Sanjay Jha, JD(U) National Working President, labeled the event as historic.
“This marks a momentous occasion. I have also received the Prime Minister’s letter, and a special session has been convened from the 16th regarding the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. This legislation will allocate one-third reservation for women in the Lok Sabha and one-third in the Vidhan Sabha, likely to be implemented from 2029,” he remarked.
BJP Bihar President Sanjay Saraogi noted, "In the realm of law-making across the country’s Legislative Assembly and Lok Sabha, the Prime Minister enacted the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam in 2023. The Congress failed to pass it over the past 30 years. This reflects the Prime Minister’s strong resolve for equal female participation in law-making. Hence, a special session of both the Lok Sabha and Rajya Sabha has been scheduled from the 16th to the 18th.
The Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam mandates a one-third reservation for women in legislative bodies. This was approved in Parliament in 2023. The proposed legislation aims to separate its implementation from the 2027 Census and base it on the 2011 Census, ensuring it takes effect before the 2029 general elections. A special parliamentary session is set for next week to discuss the Women's Reservation (Amendment) Bill.
