Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 12 (NationPress) Prime Minister Narendra Modi has reached out to the leaders of all parties in both the Lok Sabha and the Rajya Sabha, urging them to support the unanimous approval of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam. This initiative aims to ensure the implementation of women's reservation prior to the 2029 elections.
In his letter, the Prime Minister stressed the necessity of passing this legislation, which allocates one-third of seats for women in legislative bodies, during the upcoming special parliamentary session set to commence on April 16. He labelled it a crucial milestone for bolstering democratic principles.
A special session has been arranged for next week to discuss and approve the Women's Reservation (Amendment) Bill.
In his communication, PM Modi remarked, "Starting April 16, a momentous discussion regarding the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam is anticipated in Parliament. This special gathering presents an opportunity to enhance our democracy further. It is also a time to reaffirm our shared commitment to progress collectively. My intention in writing this letter is to embody this spirit and purpose."
Emphasizing the impact of women in nation-building, he asserted, "A society flourishes when women are empowered to progress, make choices, and, most critically, to lead. For India to achieve its aspiration of becoming a developed nation, it is vital that women take on a more active role in this journey."
Reflecting on the ongoing discussion about women's reservation, the Prime Minister recalled the events of 2023, when lawmakers from various parties supported the legislation.
"That was a remarkable moment demonstrating our unity. The global community observed how a significant decision was made collectively to honor our commitment to the women of our nation. Representing nearly half of our population, this was a robust step towards increasing their involvement in the political arena. I regard that day as a pivotal and inspiring milestone in India's parliamentary history," he stated.
PM Modi also pointed out that many Members of Parliament had engaged in discussions regarding the timing of the legislation's implementation. He mentioned that the government had consulted with experts and political entities before arriving at the current stance.
"Following thorough discussions, we have concluded that the moment has arrived to realize the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam's true essence nationwide. It is crucial that the 2029 Lok Sabha elections and Assembly elections occur with women's reservation enacted. This will invigorate India's democratic institutions and bolster public trust, ensuring greater participation and representation in governance," he elaborated.
Calling for a united front, the Prime Minister added, "I write this letter in hopes that we can unite in a single voice to pass this amendment. It would be wonderful for numerous Members of Parliament to share their perspectives on this matter in Parliament. This is a moment beyond any individual party or person. It is an opportunity to showcase our responsibility toward women and future generations. Given that all political factions have long expressed the desire to enhance women's representation in politics, now is the ideal time to transform that aspiration into reality."
Describing the initiative as a historic step, he further stated, "I am confident that we will unite and accomplish this momentous achievement in Parliament. MPs who contribute to the enactment of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam will always take pride in being part of this landmark effort. Hence, we must seize this opportunity."
"Your support for the amendment to implement the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam will fulfill a significant obligation towards the women of our nation. Let's further reinforce our rich democratic traditions and embark on decisive steps towards a historic transformation," he concluded.
The ruling Bharatiya Janata Party will require backing from opposition parties to secure the necessary two-thirds majority for the constitutional amendment's passage in Parliament.
The proposed legislation aims to disassociate the implementation of women's reservation from the 2027 Census, instead relying on the 2011 Census, to ensure that the quota takes effect before the 2029 general elections.
