Key Takeaways
Kolkata, April 19 (NationPress) A large gathering of women convened at Prime Minister Narendra Modi's public meeting in Medinipur district, fervently supporting his claim that the opposition parties engaged in “foeticide” by failing to vote for the Women Reservation Bill in Parliament, which ultimately resulted in its defeat.
During his address a day prior, PM Modi expressed profound disappointment with the opposition's actions, condemning the Congress, Trinamool Congress, Samajwadi Party, and DMK for “brutally undermining” this initiative both within the Parliament and in public.
One attendee shared with IANS, "The 33 percent reservation for women lacked support from the Samajwadi Party, Trinamool Congress, and other opposition groups. I felt extremely disheartened that the Bill couldn't pass."
Echoing the Prime Minister's sentiments regarding the INDIA coalition, she stated, "What he articulated yesterday is entirely accurate. The Bill's failure is akin to foeticide. Initially, no one considered the interests of women, while PM Modi prioritized us, yet the opposition obstructed the Bill. It’s truly unfortunate."
She criticized Chief Minister Mamata Banerjee for insufficient support towards women.
"Every political party promises support for women, and Mamata Banerjee has too. However, when it came to action, Didi (Trinamool MPs) did not back the Bill. She has now been revealed; her words do not align with her deeds," she remarked.
Another woman pointed out, "Why did the opposition parties hinder the Bill's passage? They should have united in support of women. PM Modi encourages women’s advancement, but the opposition seems to oppose that."
A woman, whose son has been missing for several days, accused state police of failing to make any efforts to locate him, asserting that “no one is secure in this state, regardless of gender.”
Additionally, she labeled the Congress and Trinamool as “anti-women” parties.
"The opposition, including Congress and Trinamool, neglects women’s safety. Mamata Didi advises women to stay indoors after 6 PM, but we have to go out for work. Crimes against women persist, reminiscent of the RG Kar case," she added.
