Key Takeaways
New Delhi, April 16 (NationPress) On Thursday, Members of Parliament from the Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) expressed their strong support for the Women's Reservation Bill, which was introduced by the Union government during the Parliament's extended Budget session. The BJP officials called on opposition parties to unite in their backing of this significant legislation.
Officially referred to as the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, this Bill aims to amend the Constitution to ensure that women receive a reservation of 33 percent of seats in both the Lok Sabha and state Legislative Assemblies.
Union Law Minister Arjun Ram Meghwal presented the Constitution (One Hundred and Thirty-First Amendment) Bill along with the Delimitation Bill 2026, while Union Home Minister Amit Shah signaled plans to introduce the Union Territories Laws (Amendment) Bill, 2026.
Speaking to IANS outside Parliament, BJP MP Ravi Kishan remarked, "The government led by Prime Minister Narendra Modi has accomplished a historic milestone. This day marks a pivotal moment in our nation's foremost assembly (Parliament). Moving forward, women will have strong legal backing, enabling them to assert their rights and voice their concerns effectively."
Kishan emphasized that this initiative transcends party politics and represents the core values of the BJP.
"Many are questioning why this Bill has not been enacted earlier," he added.
Regarding opposition to the Bill, Kishan urged, "Those who resist this initiative should consult their mothers and sisters. All mothers and sisters, including those from Congress, Samajwadi Party, and Trinamool Congress, are celebrating today."
He further asserted, "What is unfolding in our foremost assembly is a policy for nation-building that empowers women as they rightfully deserve."
BJP MP Dinesh Sharma characterized the Bill's introduction as a "historic occasion" and stated, "Despite representing half of our population, women's political representation has been largely overlooked. Under PM Modi's guidance, this marks a landmark decision by the NDA government."
Sharma implored the opposition to support the Bill, stating, "After years of delay, I hope the Opposition will finally back this essential legislation."
Adding to this sentiment, BJP MP Bansuri Swaraj described the day as monumental. She urged all opposition members to set aside political agendas and ideological disparities to facilitate the Bill's unanimous approval.
Moreover, she clarified that the delimitation process is not a ploy by the BJP but a constitutional requirement.
"For the effective enactment of the Nari Shakti Vandan Adhiniyam, we need to increase the number of Lok Sabha seats," she articulated. "The current total of 543 seats was determined based on the 1971 census, which recorded a population of merely 51.8 crore. Now that our population has doubled, we need to ensure that the representation within the assembly accurately reflects our current demographics."
BJP MP Kangana Ranaut commented to reporters outside Parliament, "Today marks the introduction of a historic bill for women. This period will be remembered as a golden era, an 'Amrit Kaal' for women."
