Dibrugarh, March 23 (NationPress) The state government is actively fostering Dibrugarh as Assam's second capital, with Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma highlighting that this initiative aligns with Prime Minister Narendra Modi's vision of Vikas and Virasat.

In response to the government's plan to establish a Chief Minister Secretariat in Dibrugarh, Sarma remarked, “Some might wonder why Dibrugarh? The answer is rooted in our governance principles aimed at enhancing our Virasat and Vikas. Historically, Dibrugarh has been a significant trading hub, serving as a cornerstone of India’s industrial development. It was among the first cities to receive a train link, and its thriving port facilitated extensive trade in tea, timber, oil, and coal.”

During his recent three-day visit to Dibrugarh, the Chief Minister expressed his commitment to the region.

He shared on his X handle, “I am back from Dibrugarh after a productive three-day visit. This trip is part of our ongoing efforts to bridge the gap between the government and the local populace. We have initiated several projects, including the operationalization of the Chief Minister’s Secretariat, commencing work on the Assam Assembly campus, and solidifying the city’s status as Assam's second capital.”

Sarma indirectly criticized previous Congress administrations, stating that Dibrugarh had seen a decline in its prominence in recent decades. He posted on X, “Sadly, the city has lost its former glory over the years. That ends today. Our government is implementing a comprehensive strategy—engaging all stakeholders—to restore Dibrugarh’s illustrious past and transform it into a vital economic and cultural center for Eastern India.”

“Throughout my visit, I engaged with over 60 organizations, processed 29 e-files, addressed 18 Assembly inquiries, approved 109 correspondence items, and conducted a thorough review of more than 500 ongoing projects valued at Rs 3500 crore across the Assembly constituencies of Dibrugarh, Dhemaji, Dhakuakhana, and Demow,” he noted.

“I also communicated with the Hon’ble Prime Minister and Hon’ble Union Ministers regarding urgent issues. These review meetings adopted a whole-of-government approach to accelerate the construction of roads, flyovers, highways, government facilities, embankments, power stations, hospitals, schools, and cultural and sporting amenities in the area,” the Chief Minister added.

Sarma emphasized that the government is dedicated to improving the quality of life in Assam. He stated, “In general, we are making remarkable strides to enhance the Ease of Living for every household in these regions. The ultimate goal of these extensive discussions is to ensure that every family has access to quality housing, roads, electricity, education, and healthcare.”

Specifically addressing Dibrugarh, he mentioned, “I led a thorough meeting focused on addressing urban flooding issues. I am pleased to report that we are making significant headway in desilting existing drainage, constructing new drainage systems, and acquiring dewatering pumps and mini super suckers.”
