Guwahati, May 21 (NationPress) Dibrugarh, recently recognized as Assam's second capital, is poised for a significant transformation as Chief Minister Himanta Biswa Sarma unveiled two key infrastructure projects valued at Rs 493 crore on Wednesday.
The initiatives comprise a cutting-edge Assembly complex and the largest stadium in Assam, marking a strategic move to enhance Dibrugarh's status as a vital political and cultural hub in Upper Assam.
During a press briefing following a Cabinet meeting in Dergaon, Sarma disclosed that Rs 284 crore has been allocated for the new Assembly complex's construction.
“The campus will feature a modern Assembly building, MLA accommodations, and a 1,000-seat auditorium,” he stated.
Additionally, to elevate the district’s profile, the Chief Minister announced plans to renovate the existing Khanikar Stadium into a venue with 35,000 seats, surpassing Guwahati's Sarusajai Stadium by 10,000 seats.
This upgrade will be supported by a Rs 209 crore investment.
“We aim to transform Khanikar Stadium into the largest in Assam. It will not only host major sports events but also large concerts, establishing Dibrugarh as a center for sports and entertainment,” Sarma emphasized.
These announcements coincide with the state cabinet’s endorsement of a new Concert Economy Policy designed to leverage high-revenue cultural tourism.
Dibrugarh, along with Guwahati and Jorhat, has been designated as one of three cities to host national and international music performances under this initiative.
Pointing out the economic potential, Sarma referenced a recent concert in Gujarat that generated nearly Rs 600 crore.
“We are aiming to compete with Meghalaya and present Dibrugarh as a desirable venue for world-class performances,” he added.
As a precursor to Assam's entry into the global concert scene, Sarma confirmed that Grammy-nominated American artist Post Malone will perform in Guwahati on December 8, marking one of the state's first major international events under this new cultural initiative.
