Los Angeles, Dec 18 (NationPress) The acclaimed actor Leonardo DiCaprio shared that his passion for acting stemmed from his desire to escape his surroundings.
In a conversation with Jennifer Lawrence for variety.com, DiCaprio expressed, "A significant part of my drive to pursue acting as a child was to leave my neighbourhood."
He recalled, "My stepbrother was involved in numerous commercials. He said, 'Wait a minute, you can earn money doing that? I need to leave this place.' I assumed the role of our 'stage mom', urging my parents to take me to auditions. I insisted, 'This will serve as my college fund, giving me the financial means to build a career in something.' Initially, I didn’t land any roles for quite some time."
DiCaprio reminisced: "I scored a Matchbox car commercial where I portrayed a gangster with slicked-back hair and a briefcase that I opened up."
When asked if he auditioned looking the part of a gangster, DiCaprio responded, "Absolutely. I styled my hair back and donned a leather jacket. I also landed a role in Mickey’s Safety Club, an educational after-school special about drug dangers. My debut television appearance was in The Outsiders. That’s my entire filmography right there."
Recently, DiCaprio noted that he believes Titanic empowered him to steer his own career choices, as reported by femalefirst.co.uk.
The actor starred alongside Kate Winslet in the groundbreaking 1997 film, and DiCaprio stated that the James Cameron-directed film altered the trajectory of his career.
In a statement to Deadline, he reflected, "Now, looking back, I appreciate the opportunity of being part of that film and feel fortunate not only to have participated in that movie but also to have gained the freedom to make my own choices since."
DiCaprio acknowledged that the success of Titanic granted him the liberty to select the projects he desired to engage in, viewing it as a pivotal moment in his career.
He concluded, "That has been the greatest gift."
