Why Won't Leonardo DiCaprio Ever Direct?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Los Angeles, Dec 15 (NationPress) Hollywood icon Leonardo DiCaprio has revealed that he has no intentions of stepping into the role of director in the foreseeable future.
In a dialogue with celebrated director Martin Scorsese at the TIME magazine's A Year in TIME event held in New York City, the actor expressed his lack of desire to direct, attributing it to his belief that he could never reach Scorsese's level of talent, as reported by people.com.
“People have inquired if I have an interest in directing. My response is, ‘I would never want to direct. I could never achieve anything near what Martin Scorsese accomplishes. Why would I attempt it?’” DiCaprio stated.
The star of One Battle After Another further expressed a wish that he had taken moments to step back during some of his earlier projects and “observed” the complete filmmaking journey, according to people.com.
“You embody these characters, striving to delve into their souls as deeply as possible. I would have loved the chance to be more of a voyeur … to witness what you (Scorsese) do behind the lens,” he articulated.
“Reflecting on the past, I would have relished observing the behind-the-scenes process much more,” he added.
The Oscar winner, who has collaborated on six films with Scorsese thus far, elaborated on their exceptional creative synergy, emphasizing that they often spend months in preparation and discussion before filming begins.
“This has been our typical workflow, I believe, cooperating together … engaging in debates for months beforehand, asking numerous questions, and often playing devil's advocate regarding approaches that may not be the most apparent,” he explained.
He continued, “We are currently applying this method to our latest film, and it has proven to be one of the most enlightening experiences.”
DiCaprio also mentioned that collaborating with Scorsese has been among the “most fulfilling moments” of his life.
“I grew up watching films from an early age — aspiring to become an actor,” he recounted. “My father took me to see Marty's films, alongside Robert De Niro, and advised, ‘If there is anyone you should aim to collaborate with in your career, it is this gentleman.’ Consequently, I was exposed to Marty's work at a very young age.”
The duo first joined forces on the 2002 film Gangs of New York. Since then, they have worked together on projects like The Aviator, The Departed, and Killers of the Flower Moon.
Their seventh collaboration, What Happens at Night, is currently in progress, with DiCaprio set to star alongside Jennifer Lawrence in an adaptation of Peter Cameron's novel.
