DKS: Wealthy Individuals Can Opt Out of Guarantee Schemes, Assures No Discontinuation
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Bengaluru, Feb 26 (NationPress) Karnataka's Deputy Chief Minister D.K. Shivakumar remarked on Thursday that there is nothing inappropriate if affluent individuals choose to voluntarily withdraw from the state's guarantee schemes. He emphasized that the government has no intention of discontinuing any of these programs.
Shivakumar was addressing questions from the media at Vidhana Soudha.
“It is perfectly acceptable for wealthy individuals to opt out of guarantee schemes voluntarily. We have received feedback from government employees and personnel in large IT firms indicating they do not require the benefits provided by these schemes,” he stated.
In response to rumors regarding the potential end of guarantee schemes, Shivakumar assured that there are no plans to terminate them under any circumstances.
“For instance, in certain cases, funds from guarantee schemes have been credited to the accounts of deceased beneficiaries. We are aware that ration rice is still being collected in the names of those who have passed away. However, this issue does not pertain to the Gruha Jyothi scheme,” he explained.
He pointed out that substantial amounts have been withdrawn in the names of deceased individuals and stressed the necessity to curb such misuse.
“The government is encountering challenges in identifying deceased beneficiaries, and discussions are ongoing about how to address this matter,” he added.
When questioned about comments from some ministers suggesting that wealthy individuals should forgo guarantee schemes, Shivakumar mentioned that certain beneficiaries have expressed their lack of need for these benefits.
“Some affluent individuals have indicated that they do not require these advantages, including the 200 units of free electricity. We are currently reviewing this situation,” he noted.
He urged the media not to misinterpret his comments.
“I have made it clear that no guarantee schemes will be terminated, regardless of the circumstances. Despite the challenges we face, we are committed to continuing these schemes,” he stated.
Shivakumar also dismissed claims that development projects were being hindered due to expenses related to guarantee schemes.
“In this budget, our government will unveil multiple development initiatives,” he added.
He further criticized the BJP-led central government for not providing adequate support to the state, while assuring that the state government is effectively managing the schemes.
“Approximately Rs 21 crore has been credited to the accounts of deceased female beneficiaries. We are currently investigating this issue,” he remarked.
“While guarantee schemes do impose a financial burden on the government, we have reiterated that we will not discontinue any of them, nor will there be any revisions,” Shivakumar concluded.
