Chennai, Jan 1 (NationPress) General Secretary of Desiya Murpokku Dravida Kazhagam (DMDK), Premalatha Vijayakanth, emphasized on Thursday that the Tamil Nadu government must promptly address the longstanding requests of protesting secondary grade teachers and sanitation workers, affirming that her party stands in solidarity with these groups.
During a press conference in Chennai, Premalatha articulated that the issues raised by the teachers and sanitation workers are legitimate and need immediate intervention from the state government.
She called upon the administration to engage in dialogue with the protesters and reach a fair and lasting resolution without further procrastination.
“These individuals play an essential role in the functioning of our society, and their demands must not be disregarded,” she stated.
Touching on the political landscape leading up to the 2026 Assembly elections, the DMDK leader remarked that the forthcoming elections will be unprecedented in Tamil Nadu's history.
She expressed optimism regarding significant political realignments, suggesting that a coalition government is a strong possibility post-elections.
Premalatha reiterated that the party would finalize its stance on electoral alliances only after its State conference on January 9.
“Our party will determine its future direction after comprehensive discussions at the conference. The alliance we choose will emerge as the victor in the Assembly elections,” she declared.
In response to inquiries about a potential meeting with Union Home Minister Amit Shah during his visit to Tamil Nadu on January 4, Premalatha stated that no invitation had been extended to her party.
She further noted that the DMDK is currently concentrating on fortifying its organizational framework and preparing for the upcoming State conference.
The DMDK leader also voiced significant concerns regarding the escalating drug crisis in the state. She urged the government to enhance efforts to combat the sale and distribution of narcotics, cautioning that drug abuse poses a serious threat to the youth.
Separately, the party announced that a meeting of DMDK district secretaries will take place on January 5 at the party headquarters in Koyambedu, Chennai. This meeting is expected to address organizational issues, preparations for the state conference, and the party’s political strategy leading up to the Assembly elections.
