The makers of Mohanlal's highly anticipated film Drishyam 3 are facing a legal complaint after a vehicle owner from Idukki, Kerala, alleged that his personal vehicle's registration number was used in the film without his knowledge or consent. The complaint was filed on 10 June by Rajeev, a resident of Kunchithanny in Idukki, before the Munnar Deputy Superintendent of Police (DySP).

The Complaint

Rajeev has named film producer Antony Perumbavoor, director Jeethu Joseph, and other crew members in his complaint. He alleges that the registration number of his personal vehicle was displayed in the film as the number plate of the vehicle used by Mohanlal's central character. As evidence, Rajeev submitted a copy of his vehicle's Registration Certificate (RC) to the police.

In his complaint, Rajeev demanded the immediate removal of all scenes in which his vehicle number appears. He warned that he would pursue further legal action against the production team if the scenes are not taken down.

Why Rajeev Says It Matters

Rajeev argued that the unauthorised display of his vehicle's registration number could create serious personal and legal complications. He expressed concern that any incident linked to the number shown on screen could result in unnecessary trouble for him as the vehicle's registered owner.

'Now, with the film getting traction, people who saw the film have started reacting, seeing my vehicle as a 'Drishyam' vehicle. Mostly these comments have come from the new generation,' Rajeev said.

Notably, Rajeev's vehicle is a Mahindra Scorpio, while the vehicle shown in the film is of an entirely different brand — yet the registration number displayed reportedly matches the one assigned to his vehicle.

Filmmakers' Responsibility Under Scrutiny

The complaint has renewed debate about the use of real vehicle registration details in Indian cinema. Filmmakers are generally expected to use fictional or cleared number plates to avoid exactly such disputes. The Drishyam 3 team has not publicly responded to the allegations as of the time of reporting.

This comes amid the film's strong box-office run, which has significantly raised public awareness of details shown on screen — including number plates — making the issue more visible than it might otherwise have been.

What Happens Next

The complaint is currently before the Munnar DySP. Should the police take cognisance, the production house may be asked to respond formally. Rajeev has indicated he is prepared to escalate the matter legally if the disputed scenes are not removed from the film's theatrical and digital prints.
