New Delhi, April 7 (NationPress) External Affairs Minister (EAM) S Jaishankar expressed enthusiasm over the inauguration of the High Commission of St Kitts and Nevis in India, emphasizing that this resident mission will be crucial for enhancing bilateral relations.

During the inauguration ceremony in New Delhi, EAM Jaishankar noted the longstanding and amicable relationship between the two nations, which dates back to their diplomatic ties established in 1983.

"It is well-known that India has actively embraced digital opportunities to enhance governance and economic performance. We are eager to share our best practices with partners like St Kitts and Nevis and other CARICOM members. As the High Commission becomes more established, this resident presence will undeniably be invaluable in fortifying our ties," the minister stated.

"There is a wealth of knowledge we can exchange, and a lot more to do in expanding our collaborative frameworks. The constant interactions will yield greater comfort and understanding between us. I am confident that the High Commissioner and his team will facilitate this in collaboration with my ministry colleagues," he added.

EAM Jaishankar highlighted that the bilateral relationship between India and St Kitts and Nevis is founded on shared democratic values and the historical struggle against colonialism. He remarked that these common experiences have fostered a strong bond as both nations are part of the Global South.

"Over the years, our perspectives have converged on various contemporary issues, including climate justice, health security, and development challenges. As Small Island Developing States (SIDS), St Kitts and Nevis faces unique vulnerabilities to climate change," he mentioned.

The External Affairs Minister reaffirmed India’s commitment to assist SIDS in tackling these challenges through technology transfer, capacity building, and collaboration in areas like renewable energy, disaster resilience, and sustainable development. He noted that India and St Kitts and Nevis have worked closely in various global and regional platforms to amplify their voices and safeguard their interests.

"I stand with Foreign Minister Douglas in acknowledging the significance of today's formal opening of the High Commission. A resident presence provides a solid foundation for us to enhance our bilateral relations. Your presence today, Minister Douglas, allowed for fruitful discussions and the exploration of new possibilities. India is already involved in a project focused on processing and packaging lima beans. In our earlier discussions this afternoon, we agreed to finalize a framework for quick-impact projects that will benefit local communities," EAM Jaishankar shared on X.

"We also addressed health challenges and the necessity of maintaining medical inventories and emergency supplies for CARICOM members. Tourism is essential for the economy of St Kitts and Nevis, and our dialogue included the potential involvement of Indian businesses in this sector. We also considered the advantages of making Indian talents and skills more accessible, particularly in health, tourism, and infrastructure," he elaborated.

He remarked that India and St Kitts and Nevis continue to support each other through South-South cooperation initiatives and expressed gratitude for St Kitts and Nevis' active role in the International Solar Alliance. EAM Jaishankar congratulated St Kitts and Nevis on assuming the chairmanship of CARICOM in January this year, praising the ties between India and CARICOM nations.
