Is ECI Investigating I-PAC Staff Allegations Regarding Data-Entry Roles?
Synopsis
Key Takeaways
Kolkata, Jan 10 (NationPress) In light of the ongoing controversies surrounding the Enforcement Directorate (ED) raids at the office of the Indian Political Action Committee (I-PAC) and the residence of co-founder Pratik Jain, the Election Commission of India (ECI) has opted to review the allegations concerning I-PAC personnel reportedly serving as data-entry operators during the current Special Intensive Revision (SIR) in West Bengal, all while being presented as contractual state government employees.
Sources from the Chief Electoral Officer (CEO) office in West Bengal revealed that the commission has initiated a random background check of the contractual state government employees engaged as data-entry operators in this critical revision process.
The commission, as per the insiders from the CEO's office, is particularly focusing on a thorough verification of the police clearance reports that are mandatory for these contractual employees prior to their assignment as data-entry operators, in adherence to the ECI guidelines.
Given the vital role these data-entry operators play in the revision process, the commission is taking the complaints of I-PAC staff seriously. Their primary responsibility includes manually entering details from voter enumeration forms collected by Booth-Level Officers (BLOs) and submitted to the respective Electoral Registration Officers (EROs) and Assistant Electoral Registration Officers (AEROs).
Any inaccuracies, whether accidental or intentional, at this stage could significantly affect the final decisions regarding voters' names on the final list. Following the enumeration phase— the first stage of the three-part SIR process— there have already been reports of incorrect entries causing difficulties for some voters.
Consequently, insiders from the CEO's office indicate that the commission is treating the demand for re-verifying the backgrounds of the contractual state employees appointed as data-entry operators with utmost seriousness.
The preliminary voters' list in West Bengal was published on December 16 of last year, with the final list set to be revealed on February 14 of the upcoming year. Following this, the ECI will announce the polling dates for the crucial Assembly elections in West Bengal next year.
