Mumbai, June 23 (NationPress) Former Maharashtra MLA Asif Shaikh has stirred significant controversy with his recent comments about the Mughal ruler Aurangzeb, labeling him as a 'pious' figure. This characterization has prompted a fierce backlash from multiple political factions, especially the BJP.
Shaikh, previously associated with the Congress party, asserted that Aurangzeb was respectful of all religions and fostered harmony among them. He criticized the prevailing political narrative in Maharashtra, stating, “Defaming Aurangzeb for electoral gain is the current trend.”
BJP MP Manoj Tiwari responded sharply to Shaikh's assertions, claiming they exemplify the true ideology of the Congress party.
Despite his former ties to Congress, Shaikh has since formed his own political entity, the Indian Secular Largest Assembly of Maharashtra (ISLAM), ahead of the previous year's Assembly elections.
Tiwari, speaking to IANS, remarked, “The true ideology of the Congress continually reveals itself through its leaders. This individual is calling Aurangzeb a pious person. Does that mean he justified the treatment of Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj and his son Sambhaji Maharaj?”
He elaborated, “Anyone who studies Aurangzeb’s history will be appalled. Every Indian—of any background—who values humanity, feels fury when recalling the atrocities committed by Aurangzeb. His brutal treatment of Chhatrapati Sambhaji Maharaj, the destruction of temples, forced conversions, and dishonoring of women are unforgivable. When a leader labels such a figure as 'pious', it reflects the deep insensitivity of that party.”
Tiwari also commented on the controversy surrounding popular Punjabi singer and actor Diljit Dosanjh, who has faced criticism for casting Pakistani actress Hania Aamir in his upcoming film Sardaar Ji 3. This decision comes just two months after a terrorist attack in Pahalgam, Jammu and Kashmir, which claimed the lives of 26 innocent tourists.
Regarding this issue, Tiwari stated, “There should be no cultural ties, exchanges, or collaborations with Pakistani artists. They should not be employed in Indian films or given platforms in India. This sentiment resonates nationwide, particularly in light of the sacrifices made by our soldiers.”
In conclusion, Tiwari emphasized the importance of sensitivity in such matters and urged public figures to honor national sentiments.
