Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis on Friday, 7 August directed all state government departments to accelerate infrastructure execution under the ₹34,732-crore development plan for the Nashik Simhastha Kumbh Mela 2027, warning that delays will not be tolerated. The directive came during a high-level review meeting chaired by the Chief Minister in Mumbai, with officials across departments called to account for sluggish progress.

Why Fadnavis Sounded the Alarm

Terming the current pace of work 'unsatisfactory', Fadnavis emphasised the need for sharper inter-departmental coordination and a zero-tolerance approach to deferral. He announced that a follow-up review will be convened in one month, by which point tangible, on-ground progress must be demonstrable. The Nashik Simhastha is one of India's largest religious gatherings, expected to draw an estimated 12 crore devotees — placing enormous logistical pressure on civic and state agencies.

Key Infrastructure Directives

The Chief Minister ordered the Nashik Municipal Commissioner to immediately patch potholes and complete pending roadworks. Contractors missing deadlines face strict financial penalties. Mahanagar Gas Company was instructed to coordinate with the Nashik Municipal Corporation (NMC) to clear pending gas-connection works without disrupting residents.

Priority projects identified by Fadnavis include the Nashik Ring Road, establishment of Sadhugram, upgradation of railway stations, deployment of 4,500 special State Transport (ST) buses, and creation of large-scale parking networks to handle the anticipated devotee influx.

Digital Kumbh: Tech-Led Crowd Management

Under a Digital Kumbh framework, Fadnavis mandated the integration of cutting-edge technology across the event's operations. Planned deployments include AI assistants branded as Kumbhdoot, Digital Twin city modelling, smart parking systems, facial recognition and missing-person tracing tools, and an Integrated Command and Control Centre (ICCC) for real-time crowd and security oversight. This positions Nashik 2027 as one of India's most technologically managed large-scale public gatherings.

Sanitation, Green Goals, and Skilling

To deliver a clean, plastic-free event, the plan includes deployment of thousands of temporary toilets, waste bins, and changing rooms, backed by a large sanitation workforce. Skill development programmes will simultaneously train local youth in tourism, hospitality, healthcare, and disaster management — creating employment opportunities around the mega event.

Hard Deadlines and Multi-Agency Alignment

Fadnavis set a firm deadline of March 2027 for the completion of all land acquisition, ring road construction, Sadhugram setup, and major civic amenities, with full operational readiness required by April 2027. He called on the Central Government, Indian Railways, the National Highways Authority of India (NHAI), and local administrative bodies to work in complete alignment to meet the timeline. With roughly 20 months remaining, the pressure is squarely on the bureaucratic machinery to deliver.
