Bengaluru, Oct 19 (NationPress) Union Minister for Steel and Heavy Industries H.D. Kumaraswamy on Sunday appealed to farmers to focus on organic farming as the application of pesticides diminishes soil health.
During the inaugural session of the 3rd Agricultural Insect Biocontrol Expo and the 33rd Foundation Day of the ICAR-National Bureau of Agricultural Insect Resources (NBAIR), the minister emphasized that ICAR-NBAIR is committed to empowering farmers.
He also noted that under Prime Minister Narendra Modi’s leadership, India has ascended to one of the top five economic powers globally and aims to become the third largest.
The minister encouraged more farmers to engage in pulse cultivation alongside paddy, which could help in reducing pulse imports. He mentioned that the Central Government has launched various initiatives for farmer welfare and is backing all facets of the agricultural sector.
Union Minister of State for Micro, Small and Medium Enterprises, Shobha Karandlaje, remarked that previous generations of farmers possessed greater knowledge about beneficial insects. Efforts are underway to pass this knowledge to current farmers. Under Prime Minister Modi's leadership, a greater focus is being placed on organic farming. Farmers, researchers, and scientists are being made aware of its advantages, and those adopting organic practices are receiving encouragement.
“Quality produce can only be assured when farmers cultivate healthy, pesticide-free crops. Plans are in motion to broaden the scope of ICAR-NBAIR’s operations,” she noted.
Dr. C.N. Manjunath, MP for Bengaluru Rural, highlighted that human health is linked to crop quality and soil fertility. “We must increasingly utilize biological methods. Many diseases can be avoided by embracing organic practices. Reducing pesticide and chemical fertilizer usage is crucial,” he stated.
