Chaibasa, March 17 (NationPress) A catastrophic fire swept through a residence in Geetilipi village within the Jaganathpur police jurisdiction of West Singhbhum district, Jharkhand, on Monday, resulting in the tragic demise of four children, according to officials.
The heartbreaking event unfolded around 11 a.m., sending ripples of sorrow across the village.
As per eyewitness accounts, the blaze erupted in a room where the children were playing amidst a stack of straw. With no adults present at that moment, the flames spread rapidly, engulfing the entire house.
The exact cause of the fire remains unknown, and an investigation is underway.
A local resident, Birang Gagarai, who was collecting water nearby, was the first to see the fire. She noticed the children trapped inside and attempted to save them but was quickly overcome by the extreme heat and flames. Despite her frantic attempts to extinguish the fire, it escalated rapidly.
By the time other villagers responded to her urgent pleas for help, the flames had surged, shrouding the area in thick smoke.
The fire brigade reached the scene about an hour later to combat the inferno.
The deceased children have been identified as Prince Chatar (5), son of Arjun Chatar; Sahil Sinku (5), son of Chandramohan Sinku; Rohit Sundi (2), son of Sukhram Sundi; and Bhumika Sundi (5). Their bodies have yet to be retrieved from the charred remains of the home.
Officials, including Sub-Divisional Officer (SDO) Mahendra Chotan Oraon, Police Inspector Basudev Munda, Block Development Officer (BDO) Satyam Kumar, Circle Officer (CO) Manoj Kumar Mishra, and Jaganathpur Police Station In-Charge Sanjay Singh, have arrived at the location to oversee rescue and relief efforts.
