Forecast Predicts Light Rain and Snowfall in Jammu and Kashmir Over the Next Day

Srinagar, Dec 27 (NationPress) The Valley is gripped by intense cold as the weather office predicts light rain and snowfall in the coming 24 hours in Jammu and Kashmir (J&K).
According to officials from the MET department, light rain is expected in the plains of the Jammu division, with snowfall anticipated in the mountainous regions of the Valley.
This prolonged dry period has raised significant concerns among farmers and orchardists, as the lack of moisture may negatively impact both the prospects of a fruitful Rani crop and apple production in 2025.
On Friday, Srinagar recorded a minimum temperature of minus 7.3 degrees Celsius, while Gulmarg and Pahalgam recorded minus 6 and minus 8 degrees Celsius, respectively.
Jammu city had a low of 8 degrees Celsius, with Katra at 7.4, Batote at 2.1, Banihal at minus 1.8, and Bhaderwah at minus 0.6 degrees Celsius.
The 40-day-long period of severe winter known as 'Chillai Kalan' is critical for heavy snowfall, which helps replenish the perennial water reservoirs of J&K.
These water reservoirs are vital for sustaining various rivers, lakes, streams, and springs during the summer months.
A winter without snow could lead to severe water shortages in the summer.
The extreme cold, combined with the drop in daytime maximum temperatures, contributes to a chill factor that can cause frostbite in the elderly and chillblains in children.
To mitigate these serious health risks, doctors recommend that elderly individuals and children avoid going out in sub-zero temperatures and dress warmly to prevent hypothermia and respiratory diseases.
Locals typically wear a loose tweed overgarment called the 'Pheran' and keep a clay firepot, known as a 'Kangri', woven in willow wicker for immediate warmth.
